Isobel shrugged nonchalantly, like it was no big deal to her. When she finished cooking she served them each a plate. She served herself very small portions, but she gave Ben quite a bit of food. She sat across from him and picked at her own small portion.

Isobel shrugged, and showed him her thumb and index finger almost touching, trying to tell him "a little." She wanted to change the subject, so she withdrew an old piece ofpaper from herpocket. it was crumpled and worn and must have been shown to many other travelers before him It only contained one sentence.

Ben sighed, trying to seem reluctant rather than like he was coming up with a way to tell her without really telling her. "Well... Me and my sister, we went through a lot together, and we were always really close... I love her more than anything, but she says I've changed. She won't talk to me anymore, or anyone else as far as I know." He looked at her. "I didn't really believe the people we knew when they said the same. I didn't even bother trying to change, I figured they were being over dramatic. I was happy, and that was all that mattered. I hardly even noticed my friends disappearing. It took me so long to realize what I'd done to everyone I loved. I didn't only alienate them from me, either, I alienated them from each other. I only see two of them anymore, and one I just... I know I've corrupted her. She's so much different now. The other only comes around to tell me how much I've screwed up... The truth is, I feel like a different person than the one who forced everyone away from me, and I miss them all so much. I know there's only one person who can help me, but she's convinced I'm the root of all evil. She tore me down and almost ruined my life even more when I went to her for help... I want to fix my life, even if I can't repair what I've done to everyone, I want to at least make sure it doesn't get worse. I want to see my sister again," Ben told her.

Isobel had closed her eyes near the beginning of his story, smiling, but by the end she was overcome with tears. This man sounded... so much like him... it hurt beyond belief to know these words were not for her, that the brother she still loved so much, who she waited for and begged to come home in her dreams every night, was not the man who now sat across from her, giving her these beautiful, painful words. Why? Why had this soft-spoken man who sounded so like Ben come to her door? Why had she asked him for his story asked him for the words which scraped across her soul? She wanted more than anything in this world for her own brother to say those words, to hear those words and truly believe they were meant for her.

Isobel shook her head vigorously and after a moment, she did something that surprised even her, something she hadn't done in years; She spoke.
"No... no it's not you... just... your voice sounds like somebody that I used to know..." She choked out, trying and failing to wipe away her tears.

"I just want him to come back." She admitted, too distraught to realize most people didn't actually know Ben Belacqua had a sister named Isobel anymore. "I'd give anything just to see him back to being my brother again... just one last time...."

Ben sat back on his knees and pulled off his wig, and then his facial hair. He looked up at Isobel with his tinted-brown eyes.

Isobels breath caught in her throat. She seemed frozen, her eyes wide, like she couldn't believe what she was seeing. "Oh my god.." She whispered in shock. "B-...Ben...?"
