Xander shook his head. "Too old. It's risky giving it to adults. Teenagers are safest. I make do with a sword and a gun. Speaking of which," He went up to a computer and several holographic screens appeared around him. "I ought to introduce you to the threat." He began loading images of the girl. The largest screen showed a simple picture, but the other two monitors showed video of the destruction she caused, though she was always standing far away from the panicked cameraman and difficult to identify. The picture was much closer and more detailed, and in it she looked surprisingly innocent... she couldn't be more than two or three years older than the eldest of them, with long, poker straight black hair, brown eyes and a black hooded sweater zipped up to her throat. She could be a university student. "She calls herself the Puppeteer. For well... obvious reason.." He gestured to the screens playing video. "Her real name's Danielle Mathers. She has the ability of mind control and possession."

"How did she get the power?" Ryan asked, standing near Xander as he watched the screens.

"We did... oh don't look at me like that." Zoey was giving him a 'you have got to be fucking kidding me' look. "It was for stealth missions, the last team was made to combat more than a dozen villains at the time and it was a low risk relatively harmless way of getting inside their bases."
"And how did the villains from then get their powers?" Zoey asked skeptically.
"Some scientist went to the CIA with the formula and they rejected it, citing the potential for misuse. So the scientist sells it to a mafia boos The FBI takes down said mafia boss only to find bits of the formula leaked out somehow and spread across the criminal underworld. We took the wholly intact formula from the mafia boss - the scientist was long dead by this point, so he was the only one who knew how to do the thing correctly - made eight superheroes and they stopped every single criminal who'd stumbled across the formula one way or another. Okay?" He scowled. "Anyway, once things started going south here Danielle took off like a bat out of hell. We were going to set up a search party to look for her, but by then... we had bigger problems. She's been off the radar completely for about three years, then resurfaced six months ago doing this."

"Good to know what we can expect if we get captured," Kailen said.
Ryan silently agreed with him, but he didn't say so. "You said you've read our files?" he asked instead.

By 'bigger problems' I mean the entire team was imploding in on itself. Excuse me for thinking Danielle did the right thing by getting the hell out of there." He turned to Ryan. "Yes, what about it?"

Ryan looked right at him, in his one working eye. "Do you think we have a chance?"
Even Kailen went quiet, watching Xander for the answer.

There was a long silent moment as Xander surveyed the kids solemn expressions. Even Kat had lost her stoicism momentarily, looked as worried as the others. "I'm not going to pretend it's a large chance. She's had five years of battle experience even if you don't count the three years she was missing. However, she may be able to control many bodies, but she is one mind. If the five of you can work together, use your heads and learn as you go... yes. I do think you have a chance."

"When do we start?" Aaric asked, speaking for the first time.

Xander smiled for the first time. "As soon as possible. We track her by last known sighting, you'll be dropped off as close as we can." He started typing again, trying to pull up that data.

[Raven]

"What?" Aaric asked, shocked.

[Gifted]

"You'll have a direct link to us here of course. Believe me, you don't want agents around. We sent a couple agents down with the first set of superheroes, y'know just some backup until they got the hang of things... turned out to be utterly useless and one of them nearly died trying to protect them AND the civilians. I think that might've been Danielle, actually... go figure."

[Raven]

"They haven't been trained at all and you're just dropping us off right near the enemy?" Aaric demanded.

[Gifted]

"You'll be in constant contact with base, it's just policy now not to send in any bodies to get in your way. Chances are she won't be there, anyway, we won't be sure until there's something in-progress that she'll be guaranteed to be close. Which obviously there isn't right this second. We'll have reinforcements on standby but we won't be sending them in with you."

[Raven]

"A hell of a lot of good constant contact will be if we end up getting killed in five seconds because they don't even know how to properly throw a punch," Aaric snapped.

[Gifted]

"You'e the only one whose power means you have to actually throw a punch, Aaric."
"Mine is a shield" Zoey snapped, looking anxious.
"Have you tried pushing it out away from yourself really fast? Blunt force trauma. I thought you people were supposed to be creative?" Xander facepalmed.
