"I didn't. I'll tell you later, okay?" Ryan asked.
"Why?" Lynn asked. "Everything will be fine. I'll make sure no one's mean to you."

"Mmkay," Eric grunted in response. He watched the landscape go by, occasionally glancing at the bat-horse-dragon-things.
Liz grew a small smile. "Thanks," she said appreciatively.

"So.... What house do you think Liz's gonna be in? You never got the chance to answer," Ryan said, trying to change the subject.
Lynn nodded, smiling. "Of course. You're my friend, aren't you?"

"Probably not Gryffindor," yawned Eric, "Not Slytherin, either... Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw, I bet." He couldn't help but stare at the thestrels.
Liz's smile grew wider. "Yeah," she said happily, nodding, "We're friends."

Ryan nodded. "I bet she'll be a great kid to have around. And Lynn really doesn't mean any harm," he said.
"Yay!" Lynn squealed. "I'm so glad." The boats floated into the cavern beneath the castle, coming to a landing against a sandy beach. "Alright, be careful while you get out of the boats," Logan said.

Eric gave a small smile. "Yeah, sorry for, uh, jinxing her," he apologized, again rubbing the back of his neck, "That word just... I really don't like it."
"Me, too," Liz replied, doing her best to make it seem like she meant it with all her heart. She gathered her robes so they wouldn't drag on the ground, and carefully stepped out of the boat.
Meanwhile, Professor Marx was waiting impatiently. He was in the entrance hall, holding a pocketwatch in one hand and his wand in the other. His thick boots tapped impatiently against the marble floors.

Wesley and his brother leapt out at the same time, high fiving when they saw they'd jumped in the same second. Wesley turned to walk up to the beach, but Tanner stopped and waiting for August.

Logan led the first years into the castle, past their luggage, and up to Lucien. He glanced at Professor Marx's pocket watch and scowled. "Are we late already?" he asked.
"Don't worry about it, Eric. It was great," Ryan replied. "Come on, let's get to the feast."

Professor Marx glanced up at Logan. Upon seeing the fellow staff member, he put the watch in his pocket. He liked using the occasional muggle device, it gave him a certain air of antiquity. "You almost were," he replied with a small smirk.
"Best part of the entire year, the feast!" Eric exclaimed. Once the carriage landed, he jumped out, only to have his robes caught in the carriage itself and fall on his face. That seemed to be an ongoing tradition for him.

"Don't you trust me?" Logan asked, indignant.
Ryan found it hilarious every time. He extended his hand for his friend. "Come on, Eric, we'll be the last ones there!"

"Of course I trust you," Marx replied, looking slightly offended but mostly grumpy, "I just don't trust the train to run on time. Is there anything I must know, or may I begin the speech?"
Eric gladly took Ryan's hand and pulled himself to his feet. "I'm coming as fast as I can!" he whined.

"Nothing that I know of, go ahead," Logan answered, slipping back down the stairs.
Ryan pulled Eric by the hand up to the castle.

"Alright." Marx clapped his hands together and faced the first years. Obviously, they didn't immediately quiet. He simply folded his arms and waited for the crowd to settle down before starting. "Welcome to Hogwarts," he spoke, "My name is Lucien Marx, though as students you will refer to me and other teachers by 'Professor' and then their last name. So you will know me as Professor Marx.
"The start-of-term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your Houses. The sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your House will be something like your family within Hogwarts. You will have classes with the rest of your House, sleep in your House dormitory, and spend free time in your House common room.
"The four Houses are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Each House has its own noble history and each has produced outstanding witches and wizards. While you are at Hogwarts, your triumphs will earn your House points, while any rule-breaking will lose House points. At the end of the year, the House with the most points is awarded the House Cup, a great honor. I hope each of you will be a credit to whichever House becomes yours.
"The Sorting Ceremony will take place shortly in front of the rest of the school. Remember, this is in front of your peers, and if you do something stupid now it will reflect on you for the rest of your careers." He turned, and started towards the doors that enclosed the Grand Hall. "I'll return when we're ready. Try to make yourselves look better." At that, he departed to converse with the other teachers.
Eric followed.

Astin grinned. Lynn scowled. "Look better?" she asked.
Ryan pulled Eric up the stairs, to the great hall. "Hey, firsties. Good luck breaking our record! Already late for something!" He laughed and looked at Eric. "D'you think we should go in or wait for Marx to open the door?"

Liz shrugged at Lynn, and just smoothed her hair back a bit.
Eric smirked at the poor first years, then looked back at Ryan. "We should wait for him to open it," he suggested, "so we don't look too conspicuous..."
