"Hufflepuff? No way," Wesley laughed. "They'd never stick me in Hufflepuff. I'm not a hard worker and I'm to over-the-top for that. Slytherin I could see happening. I wouldn't like it, but I could see it happening."

"They have too, you're just too blind to see them," Eric pouted. He climbed into the carriage, not wanting to ask anybody if they had seen them before.
"O-okay," Liz mumbled. She carefully stepped into the rowboat, and wobbled a bit before settling down.

Lynn and Astin climbed in behind her. "I can't wait to see the castle, Ryan says it's amazing," Astin said.
"They haven't. Maybe we could ask a professor, then," Ryan said. "See if there's really something wrong with me."
"You mean the thestrals?" the girl who had been sitting there asked.

"I can't wait either," Liz said plainly, mostly because the others were buzzing about the castle. Eric hadn't said anything about the school itself, just that it was giant and easy to get lost in.
"Yeah, those things," Eric replied to the girl, "He says they've never been here, but I think he's lying."

The girl laughed. "Thestrals have always been here, but he hasn't seen them. You can only see thestrals if you've seen someone die," she said.

"Ha!" Eric exclaimed, pointing an accusing finger at Ryan. He slowly deflated when he realized the implications of what Ryan being able to see them could mean. "... sorry..."
Liz looked at Lynn and shook her head. "Nothing. Why?"

Ryan shrugged, staring at the thestrals pulling their carriage. He was obviously pale.

Eric glanced to the side, wrestling with himself to find the right words. "... sorry about whoever died," he settled on, rubbing the back of his neck nervously.
"I'm perfectly happy!" Liz insisted in a huff, "Just kinda.. scared... I guess..."
