"But why would they, Raven? Humans have never organized themselves that way."
"Well, why don't we go down there and find out?" Natalia said pointedly. Just then, the drawbridge lowered.

A lithe, graceful girl stood at the edge of it. Even from this distance they could see that she was dressed strangely, with a periwinkle cape flowing over her shoulders and something blue in her hair that was catching and sparkling in the light.
The girl stepped off the drawbridge and closed in on the small group of people at an inhuman speed. They barely had time to react before the girl pulled a thin sword and mercilessly stabbed two of them without hesitation.

[Raven]

Raven didn't have the focus to answer the question once the drawbridge opened and then they were watching people get stabbed. "Holy shit," Ryan said, stepping back. "I think we know why no one comes into the city."

[Gifted]

"Can any of you hit that far away? Can we help them?" Natalia asked, watching the other four try in vain to fight the blue-clad killer.

[Raven]

Ryan shook his head. "No," Raven confirmed. "We can try to get closer, though."
"That seems like a bad idea," Ryan said.

[Gifted]

"We can't just leave them!" Natalia said. That's when a small voice behind them spoke up.
"Whether you go or not, could you please stop standing in front of my cave? You're scaring away the animals." A malnourished, dirty face peeked at them from a crevasse behind them.

[Raven]

Ryan spun on his heel, while Raven turned around more slowly and smiled. "Sorry," Raven offered. "We're not from around here, we didn't realize anyone lived here. Do you know what's with the city?"

[Gifted]

"Of course. Why are you out here if you're not traveling to the independent city?"

[Raven]

"We got lost," Ryan responded. "We saw the city and thought to head there, but after that reception."

[Gifted]

"Yeah, you don't want to give her the idea you might be attacking." He agreed. "Especially if your mages, she'll kill you sooner than let you in. Of course, she won't let me in either, or I wouldn't be out here."
"Who's she?" Amy asked.
"Oh, that was Lady Skye. She runs the independent city of Forsvar, that was her you just saw kill those guys down there."

[Raven]

Neither Raven nor Ryan connected the name to the girl they knew. "Why won't she let you in?" Ryan asked.

[Gifted]

"Claims not to trust me. She's super possessive of her city. It's impossible to get in without her permission, and she never lets anyone leave."

[Raven]

"Why does anyone go inside?" Raven asked. Ryan glanced at him a bit incredulously, as though that were obvious considering the landscape.

[Gifted]

"For a lot of people, that place is their only hope. I can't return to civilization. I'm starving out here. She knows that people see her city as a refuge, but she doesn't care. Lady Skye will kill you without a thought."

[Raven]

"That's terrible," Ryan said. "Is there nowhere else around here?"

[Gifted]

"Where have you been, man? Forsvar is the only independent city left."
