"Oh my sister told me her apartment number... assuming I could find it. Do you know where 106 is?" She asked. It now made sense that Kailen didn't know her sister... apartment 106 was notorious for being one of those rooms that never, ever seemed to have anyone going in or out. There had to be an owner, but no one had ever seen their face.

"Uh. Yeah... Are you sure she said 106?" Kailen had always assumed the worst about the resident, but maybe she just didn't like the kind of people who lived in the building?

Mariah went up and knocked on the door. "It's Mariah." She called.
A young woman barely pushing twenty opened the door halfway and looked out fearfully. She had an ugly scar across her face and a tooth missing. "What is he doing here?" She hissed when she saw Kailen.
Mariah sighed. "He gave me directions to your place, he's not-"
"I told you not to bring anyone here!" She slammed the door shut again before Mariah could protest. Mariah knocked on the door again."
"Marianne? Marianne! I can't stay here, I have to go to work!" She knocked harder. "Marianne?!" Her sister did not answer. Mariah sighed and pulled out a white envelope. "Okay, well I'm just going to push the money under the door then." She said, and did just that, forcing the envelope under the crack in the door. "Marianne, I really have to go." Still no answer. "Call me later, okay?" Nothing but silence. Mariah sighed, turned, and left without another word.

Kailen sighed. "Sorry." He headed back to his place, thinking about the short encounter.
The next morning after work, Kailen called Stephanie's office again.
