"Okay, take my hand. Don't pull away until I let go." She held out her hand like one would for a handhake.
When Kailen took her hand, it began to glow with a faint yellow light which grew slowly brighter and brighter, until it wasa brilliant, blinding white light. Then all at once the pain appeared, burning as though Kailen's hand was pressed to a hot stove-top.

Kailen very nearly dropped her hand on reflex, but held on tighter to force himself to not let go. He didn't want to know what would happen if he did.

After thirty seconds or so, the light died out slowly, and as it became dimmer the burning subsided. Finally when her hand was a normal colour again, she released his. "There. Sorry about your hand." If Kailen checked, his hand actually was burned red.
