Over the next few weeks Xander got used to travelling and fighting with Ben. The two got along pretty well for the most part, and they definitely worked well together in battle. Even after that day Xander refused to kill anyone, but he no longer objected when Ben did it. He just clenched his fists and looked away.
It felt good to have a companion again. Xander didn't have to watch his back so much, and he knew if he got in trouble he had someone who could bail him out. The fear began to fade from his eyes.
But it never entirely disappeared. Because as much better as he felt, he couldn't fix anything. He couldn't stop thinking about his friends. And he couldn't stop the nightmares.
"Alex!" He jerked awake in a panic, calling out for his friend. It wasn't the first time the nightmares had awoken him in the last few weeks, but it was the most obvious. It was early in the morning... probably too early for people to normally be awake.

Ben looked around for attackers before he realized what his companion was shouting. "Xander," he rested a hand on the younger man's shoulder.

It was totally and completely irrational but since he'd just said his nae for a split second Xander thought Alex had actually answered. Needless to say, he was crushed when common sense kicked in and he realized it was just Ben. "Sorry, Ben," he muttered, feeling bad for waking him up. He got to his feet.

Xander gave a small smile, knowing Ben was probably trying to make him feel better. "Alright then, let's pack up."

Xander went red. "Occasionally." He tried to make it sound like no big deal, but his voice fell flat.
