Joan sighed. She knew Ben could be stubborn. "Aright." She said, but she only swallowed one, pocketing the other two for when she actually might need them. "What have you been doing all this time?"

"Same thing I was doing before - more or less," Ben answered.

"That must be nice." She smiled. To go back to the way things were before the rebellion. A lot of the former rebels had done that... they'd somehow managed to pretend the whole thing hadn't happened. She remembered what she'd been doing before that... she'd had a decent life with her family, studying to become one of the Secret Police one day because of her proficiency in combat. Not necessarily a job she'd ever wanted, but the studying was fun...

"If it must be so nice, then why did you turn those boys down when they asked you to help them?" Ben inquired.

Joan was taken aback at the question. "You mean you didn't?" She asked. "...it's a lost cause Ben, you must know it's a lost cause, it's not like you've gotten anything going in fifteen years either. And I for one do not want to be responsible for when those kids start dying! Or-" she cut herself off there, not wanting to bring up poor Isobel after all this time.

"I'm not giving up on my sister," Ben hissed. "I don't care what it costs, or what it takes. I may not have gotten something together in the last sixteen years - but I certainly haven't been letting kids push me around."

"Excuse me for not wanting to be arrested." Joan said, slightly offended.

Ben shrugged. "Don't get caught. Or stay away from the kids in the first place."

"I try to,they just show up. I'm just trying to live my life, here." Joan sighed and turned away. "It's no big deal, anyway. It's not as though I'm not used to it."

"You shouldn't be," Ben said. "Are you really going to turn me down, too?"

Jeanne sighed in obvious relief. "Okay... I'm ready to go, then. You?"

"What are you even going to do, Ben? Do you have a plan?" She demanded. Something in her seemed to have broken, and the words she'd kept bottled up inside her for so long finally came rushing out. "To have a successful rebellion you need strong leaders and the support of the people. You need both, not just one, and the people are... apathetic at best! You think you're desperate? I haven't been able to so much as think of anything else for fifteen years! You stand there and look down on me for giving up, well it's all fine for you when the whole world thinks you're dead. You're not the one who sees the familiar faces every day around you, old friends from the rebellion, turning away from you in disgust or obliviously going about their lives like they've forgotten the whole thing ever even happened. Well lucky fucking you then, huh? I thought even if we failed, at least we could show people there was another way to live, maybe set up just the idea so for something that could actually succeed in the future. But we didn't change anything, we didn't even change anyone's perspective, and it just ended with thousands of people dead. And I don't even care; If I honestly thought there was even a chance we could do it again and succeed, I would. But no rebellion ever makes it without the people. And the people just... don't... care." Tears were running down her face by the end of it and she looked away from him, determined not to let anyone, not even her closest friend, see her breaking. God, she needed some prisoners honey or something. But he money in her pocket was supposed to go towards new clothes...

"Then call it an assassination, Joan. I'm going to end that fucker's life and get my sister back or die trying, I don't care what the people want," Ben hissed. "They could praise him like a God, but I'm not going to give up." He glared at her. "But you're right - the most desperate people are the ones who do nothing. The rest of us have hope - we made it." He turned and stalked away without looking back.

Joan watched her old friend walk away and for only the third time in twenty years, sat down on the pavement and cried.
