Ryan nodded. "My friend brought a list of people he thought would help us today. He's going to find out where they live and tell me tomorrow."
"None of your business," Melanie replied, stuffing the book in her bag.

"Hows he gonna do that?" Kyla asked. "If he doesn't already know where they live... it's not like he can go up to them and ask, or knock on every door till he finds them."
Owen knew how his stepfather would handle this, but he did not want to be like that freak. So instead of backing off and bringing it up again later, he pressed on. "I'm not going to turn you in, you're not the only one who finds stuff like that. I just want to know."

"He said something about his step dad's computer," Ryan said, shrugging.
Melanie glared. "It was locked in a chest in a cave I found," she snapped.

"His stepdad has a computer? So he's a government child?" Kyla sounded suspicious, not of Ryan this time, but of this friend of Ryans.
((ALLL the suspicion is gonna go onto Owen XD it's sad....))
Owen was surprised. "That's.. wow. These things just keep getting weirder. I found something called a Sunny Walkman buried in some ashes and a friend of mine found an entire library." He hadn't brought his Walkman... he debated showing her Ryans book, but decided against it for now.

"Yeah, I suppose." Ryan shrugged.
"Why do I care?" Melanie asked.

"So let me get this straight. You want to o up against the government with a guy who already gets everything he could ever want under this government?" Kyla said sceptically. "Yeah, that'll work."
"You're not the least bit curious about this old stuff?" Owen asked. "I think it's amazing. Some of the things they could do that we just can't now."

Ryan fixed her with his violet stare. "My father worked for Nike."
"Clearly we aren't getting the same stuff," Melanie snapped. "Anne Frank was forced to hide in her attic with all her family. When they were found, they were brought to concentration camps where Jews were put through awful things. She starved to death. Others were put in acid showers, or baked into human crisp. Yes. It was wonderful." Truly, she was awed by the fact that they had been allowed to publish the book, but she didn't like this boy.

"Yeah, and are you under his wing now?" Kyla pointed out. "Judging by that microsoft you call a hoverboard, I'm gonna say not. But your little friend has everything! That's sure to end well." Kyla said sarcastically.
"But...but it's not real... Ryan said none of the books were real." Owen said. "And besides, if the government hated her so much, how was she able to publish it?"

"He could have turned me and my family in easily enough, just by the fact that I don't have the tattoo. He's also been inside my library. He's the greatest asset we have. We'll need someone who knows about the government in order to beat it. And we'll need money, something I certainly don't have," Ryan pointed out.
"This one is. And she died of starvation. How do you suppose she published it when she was dead? There were multiple governments, and a different one published this. Long after she was dead," Melanie said. Then she decided to question back. "Who's Ryan?"

"And that also puts him in the greatest position if this actually works to bring us down from the inside and sell us out to the government he'll no doubt work for in a couple years." Kyla shook her head. "What's in this for him? What exactly does he get from helping us that he doesn't already have?"
"A friend of mine. And if that's the case, hen what happened to the governent that did this to her?"

"What does he get for selling us out? They can't capture everyone who hates the government, Kyla. As much as they try to hide it, there are just too many of us. It would mean that there weren't half as many people in the factories," Ryan said. "He hates his step dad and the government, no matter who he is."
Even though the Diary didn't say, Melanie had learned that from another book. "It happened in Germany. There was a war all over the world, the second one. It was Germany, Japan, and Italy, known as the Axis Powers, versus a bunch of other countries, called the Allies. The Axis Powers surrendered when America set the first atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. America published this when the diary was found years later."

"No, but they can catch a few high-ranking people in the rebellion and make an example out of us. Do YOU know what goes on in triple R? That's what I thought. It seems way too risky to me."
"Funny how we're not taught this sort of stuff in school." Owen pointed out.

"My family will only make it a few more years unless something changes. My youngest sister is only seven. We're fucked unless this works out. I'm willing to take a risk for that, even if you aren't," Ryan said.
"We aren't taught a lot of stuff in school. Including words, as I've found out. I still don't know what some of them mean," Melanie said. "We also aren't taught about atoms, but those were mentioned along with the atomic bombs."

"I'm just saying a government child is not the best person to be pinning all our hopes on. Just because we have to take risks just to make this work doesn't mean we can't take countermeasures." Kyla said smoothly.
"And the stuff we are taught is wrong. Take music, for example. It's not nearly as unpleasant as they make it out to be." Owen said, pleased they were finally having a semi-friendly conversation.

"I didn't tell him about you," Ryan replied.
"They used to have awards for music artists," Melanie spouted off.
