Owen noticed the tone. "Are you okay?" He ased, offering a hand to help her up.
Kyla cried out in alarm when she heard a voice shout through the door. Closing her textbook, she put it back on the shelf as she debated whether or not she ought to answer. She coiuld just hide... But where would she hide? Bookshelf, table, cuboards, workbench... the place was bare and had no real hiding places.

"It's Ryan," he added as an afterthought, pulling the trapdoor closed behind him.
Melanie flinched, looking at him as though she expected to be hit.

"Oh!" She let out a sigh of relief and called "Geez, Ryan, you nearly gave me a heart attack." At the bottom of the trapdoor was a single, large concrete room. Along the left wall was a counter of granite, with cuboards above and below it holding various chemicals and objects for expiriments. Directly to Ryans left, along the wall where the door was, two bookshelves were built in to the wall, holding all manner of science textbooks, ones like Ryan never would have seen even if he'd gone all the way through the end of school. There was another shelf full of them on the back wall, and the right wall, and a fifth on the other side of the door he'd just came through. Along the back wall there were multiple posters, some showing the inside of various parts of the human body (Think like in a doctors office) and some detailing safety percautions for expiriments. on the right was Kylas workbench, an old wooden thing she'd made herself, with tools hanging off it in multiple places. There was also a shelf along this wall, which had more tools sitting atop it. Along the wall Ryan had just come from behind multiple devices were standing, most of which Melanie had no clue what they did - A telescope, three seismometers, A barometer, a metal detector, and several other gadgets. Also sitting there was an old 90's/ early 00's computer, the kind with the monitor with the back half a foot away from the monitor. it had been opened, showing the wires inside.
Owen looked confused, but didn't move. Then, he thought he got it. "Are youn not from around here? Don't worry, I won't tell anyone."He extended his hand a little more, to show his offer of help was not going to be rescinded because of her nationality.

Ryan grinned at her. "Sorry I scared you, but wow." He looked around the room. "This place is loaded."
Melanie scrambled backwards and leaped to her feet, taking a defensive position, but one that clearly hadn't required any training. She was just used to trying to avoid other people's hands.

"I know, right?" She grinned, looking around. "The tools I found washed up on the beach, and the workbench I built myself. Everything else was here when I found it.
Owen pulled his hand back and held them up in a gesture of surrender. "Sorry... I was just trying to help. Are you okay?"

Ryan nodded. "Awesome. What're you working on..?"
"I'm f-fine," Melanie snapped.

"Right now? I'm just reading... I've only actually done a few expiriments myself.... just the ones wrtten in these books... well, and a few electricity expiriments, but that was just to make sure I could start repairing hoverboards without something going horribly wrong." She laughed. "The expiriments in the book just confirm what the writers already know... it's facinating how much they knew back then."
"Alright...." Owen said slowly, and went to retrieving the papers, which had been strewen everywhere by his fall. Thankfully, he'd held onto the book.

"I bet. They talked different too," Ryan told her.
Melanie glared. "What's all that?"

"I noticed a little bit of that, but I just figured they were mentioning concepts I didn't understand yet... but how would you know that?" She asked curiously.
"Just stuff for my stepfather," he lied, hoping she didn't try to read one.

Ryan grinned. "I found a library, and a friend of mine found something called a Sunny Walkman," he said.
She crossed her arms over her chest. "Stuff like what?"

"A what? And you found a library? That's so cool!" Kyla said, shocked.
"Stuff like my stepfathers stuff." He answered, equally stubborn. He picked up the last of them and straightened them into a neat pile.

"It's electronic and it plays sound," Ryan replied. "The library's awesome. But none of the books are like these."
Melanie glared, too occupied with his things to notice she'd dropped some of hers as well. Her bag had been partially open and she'd hung upside down and out had fallen the Diary of Anne Frank. It wasn't a new copy by any means, but the fall didn't seem to have hurt it.

"What are they like, then?" Kyla asked curiously.
Owen saw the book lying on the ground. It didn't look like a textbook... she picked it up and quickly flipped it over. Nope, it had words on the back. It was more like something of Ryans than anything you would find today. He was shocked. "This boook... is it yours?"

"Like... Something made up. But really good. The one I'm reading is about a different culture, but set here. There are thirteen districts and a Capitol and twenty four kids are sent to fight to the death every year. Like Acts of Patriotism, against the other districts, but all at the same time, out in the wild. And the districts decide they don't like the Capitol taking their kids, so they start a war against the government."
"Didn't anybody ever tell you not to take things that aren't yours?" Melanie demanded, trying to snatch it.

"That's... crazy. People just made these things up?" Kyla asked, surprised.
"It was on the ground," Owen said defensibvely. "And... I've seen something like that before. But how on earth did you get ahold of it?"
