"I'll have the vegan burger," Frederick requested. "And water. Thank you." He smiled.

"No problem sir," The waitress said, and left for the kitchen. Deborah sat there quietly, trying to think of a way to phrase her question. "There's something I don't understand... Why do you want to do this? No, I'm sorry, that came out all wrong... I agree this is something that has to be done. But... you're the inspector! You have, everything! I would understand if it was someone like me, who's had every advantage taken away from them, or even just a regular factory worker... they have the cause. But you've... you've won the genetic lottery! You've beaten the system! Do you know how many people could afford to do someting like this just out of the goodness of their hearts? So.... why?"

Frederick smiled. "I understand what you mean; I have the least to gain from this, and the most to loose. Even if this goes the way we would like, there's a good chance that I would have lost rank, since I will by no means try to claim myself as any kind of leader in this movement. The reasons I have might seem weak, even, but they're the only reasons I have and they mean a lot to me. I might have been the 'lucky' one, and I won't deny I believe that my social place is above yours, but as much as that means you doing jobs I would never consider, it also means it's my job, as someone with more power, to take care of you; you are my responsibility. The most important job of the people with power is taking care of the masses. Without the base, a tower could never stand." Frederick smiled again, softly. "One person might seem insignificant compared to millions, but if you remove one brick from our tower, it weakens the structure. Bricks are always being added, but they should replace the ones that are weakening on their own, of old age or of some other force that can't be helped. We don't need to remove perfectly good bricks just because we can. I never want to abuse my power, and it shames me that some with even greater power and responsibility would... That's why."

"Wow...." Deborah looked at him with respect. You'd never catch her father thinking that way. From a young age she'd been raised to believe they were simply superior beings to the ones who toiled in the factories every day, we were geneically more perfect in every way. He treated them as nothing more than dogs... or toys. Indeed, she remebered as a child she'd made her dad pull a bunch of factory workers off their jobs on a trip there and cater to her every whim because she was bored, and they were playthings. It was only after she'd seen the smiles on their faces, even as she ordered them and generally acted like a spoiled little brat, that she realised she'd been doing them a service... this was like a break to them. They were still getting paid, but were notworking their hands down to bone, working till they felt like they'd drop or risking a severed limb every second. It would be a long time before she truly understood those emotions, but it had opened her eyes to the humanity in these people, something her father had never wanted to see Her parents must have considered it cruelly poetic. She'd thought like those people; now she'd become those people. "That's... realy noble of you..."

Frederick shrugged. "Besides, if the laborers weren't around, I might have to get my hands dirty. I'd be done for in a day," he joked.

"I really hope that was a joke." Deborah said, with a slight laugh.

"Only kind of. I have a genetic disorder that doesn't allow my blood to clot. A bruise could do me in, let alone something like what happened to your hand," Frederick said with an ironic smile. "There's really not a whole lot I can do without worrying."

"Oh wow... I guess for someone like you, it's a good thing government officals get their health taken care of for a little money, isn't it?" Deborah laughed. "Yes, I suppose it wouldn't be a good idea for you to be in a factory."

Frederick smiled. "Not really, though I doubt it's a wonderful idea for anyone."

"Very true... But how else is stuff built?" She sighed, then smiled. "I guess we figure that out when we get there, huh?"

Frederick nodded. "Even if we just added a few things that would sacrifice a bit of productivity for the sake of safety, it would be better off," he said with a sigh.

"Absolutely." Deborah agreed, and the waitress came back with their meals.

Deborah was completely fine with the silence, savouring the best meal she'd had in years. Though her stomach seemed much smaller than most due to her limited money and therefore food for the last several months, she kept eating after she was full, knowing it was probably more healthy to get more food into her. She still had to stop after about three-quarters of the meal.

Frederick ate all his with no apparent difficulty. He was lean, and some would suppose he had a hollow leg. He didn't comment about her not finishing.
