"Disowning you is the brutal punishment?"

"No, that was the escalation. You have normal parents, you wouldn't understand." Stephanie turned away.

"I might if you explain it to me," Kailen said. "I don't know, it just seems like if they were so terrible, it wouldn't be so bad to get rid of them."

"Well, it hurts when the reason they threaten it is that you couldn't possibly be their daughter anyway so they shouldn't have to bother with you."

"Yeah, that makes sense," Kailen said.

"I would get locked in my room when they were finished shouting at me. Extra lessons peppered with snide comments. Making my cousin teach me because he's younger than me to prove I should already have figured it all out. He was basically in charge of me whenever my parents or aunt weren't around. It just... it might not sound like a whole lot to you, but you didn't have to spend every minute of every day proving to your family that you were one of them."

"I don't have much room to judge," Kailen said. "My parents were great. I regret not realizing that earlier."

"We come from different worlds, I get that. I'm from Rook's upper crust and you're one of the hundreds of thousands of data point for Bug. Both things pretty much come with the territory." Stephanie shrugged like it didn't bother her. "I shouldn't expect our lives to have much in common."

"We're both out here doing the same thing," Kailen said. "That's what matters."

"Yeah." Stephanie nodded and then fell back to speak to Bug, not interested in continuing the conversation.

Kailen sighed and sped up, walking along with Rook, though he didn't say much.

They didn't continue walking for much longer than that anyway. Rook declared that this was a good place to stop and that they needed to train at some point before sundown tonight. He kept them working until sundown and assigned shifts like normal, even though everyone was exhausted.

Kailen groaned as he realized that he was on shift again. It seemed like a bad idea for everyone to be so tired for watch, though he figured no watch was probably worse. "Do you typically train this much?" Kailen asked Rook.

"Yes. They need to be functional by the time I walk away." Rook answered. "Or they will just get caught again."

"Exhaustion seems a bit much, though, doesn't it?" Kailen asked.
