One of the other three stepped in her path, brandishing his gun. Flare threw a knife at him, but he managed to dodge. "We're not going to make it. Stay back." Flare said worriedly, grabbing another knife. Garnet could feel her fear and anxiety as she looked for a way out. But those weren't the only emotions Flare was feeling. She was a cocktail of conflicting thoughts and feelings as she turned back on the other two aggressors. Despite fighting for her very life, she seemed to be holding back, trying to restrain herself, splitting her own attention. But she also needed to act instinctively, on reflex, and keep her head in the fight.. Whatever was causing er to hold back was preventing that and worsening her odds, to the point where she took several bad hits and she clearly knew it was affecting her. Garnet could feel her restraint getting less firm. To Kailen, Flare's fighting style was novel, but not entirely surprising. Generally the Flare he knew preferred combat from a distance and would draw water from the air around her opponent to fight. Not that she couldn't do up close, but she usually got to pick how she fought as they lived in her domain, and she preferred not to approach until after she'd incapacitated her opponents. This younger Flare, however, got up close and dirty, and fought with a knife, which older Flare wasn't known to do. She was, however, known to torture with a knife, and so the weapon wasn't entirely a surprise to see in her hands.

Kailen moved backwards again, watching what was going on. This was closer to the Flare he was familiar with, and it seemed proof that she'd been acting the whole time. "Flare!" Garnet objected. "Come on, please, just run!"
