"Thank you Ryan. That's really sweet." Stephanie was pleased she seemed to begetting a positive reaction from him.

Ryan shrugged. "It's true. You seem really good at it, too. You wouldn't be here if you weren't the best for the job, I'm sure."

"Well I dunno about the best. My parents never seemed to think I was good enough." She laughed. "But thank you for the compliment. Do you want to train together? I'd love it if you could teach me a little more about fighting."

"Sure," Ryan agreed. "I'd like that. You know a bit of hand-to-hand, yeah?"

"Just a bit." Stephanie answered.

"Well, what sorts of things? You can show me, if that'd be easier."

"Alright, well..." She began to go over as much as she remembered her parents teaching her. It was mostly basic blocks and counters that would serve her well if she was talking to someone and they tried to take a shot at her, but in an all-out brawl that lasted ore than a few seconds would most likely do her little good.

"That's a really great start," Ryan assured her. "I'm gonna teach you some attacks, though. That way you can actually try to end the fight."

Ryan began teaching her a couple simple offensive techniques. They weren't things that would really let her win a fight against someone who was trained, but it was a good first step.

Stephanie was a good student, listening intently to everything Ryan had to say and never interrupting except to ask questions. The only thing one could say about her was she seemed a little too eager to do everything right the first time, growing nervous and apologizing if she didn't understand or made even an understandable, minor error.

"Hey, Stephanie, you know it's okay to mess up, right?" Ryan asked after a while.

Stephanie blushed. "Sorry... I know I'm not very good but I'm trying, I swear..."

"Stop apologizing." Ryan shook his head. "You can mess up. If you mimic me exactly, you're going to do it however is best for me, which you aren't. I'm taller, and stronger. I can take a hit. You have to learn your way, so you should mess up."

Stephanie jumped a bit. "Sor-" She went to apologize, then realized she was literally apologizing for apologizing. She smiled, a bit embarrassed. "I guess it's been a long time since I learned from anyone one on one like this who was quite as kind as you."
