Stephanie shook her head. "I'm sorry, Monique. I didn't mean to scare you, but I don't want you to get hurt."

Too late to console her, Monique was already to the front door, about to leave.

"Hey, Monique, is something wrong?" Adam asked, concerned.

Stephanie didn't try to stop her. She looked down, full of guilt and regret.
"Oh dear, let me get you a cloth. You can't go home like this." Isobel said when she saw Monique crying.

"Hey, Stephanie, we'll figure this out," Kailen said.

"I shouldn't have told her." Stephanie sighed.

Monique froze in the doorway. Slowly, with a sniffle, she turned around. "I'm sorry, Mr. Belacqua, but I need to leave. I just got a call from my parents. My grandma's in the hospital. I need to go home." With this, Monique left the house before anyone had the chance to stop her. She hadn't told a lie; Monique's grandmother was in fact in a hospital, but was interred in the long-term care unit, and had been for several months.

Adam frowned. "Poor girl."
"She'll get over it," Kailen said. "It wasn't like she'd have accepted us blowing her off."

"I guess." Stephanie agreed. "I should head back to the hotel. I don't want to intrude on your parents hospitality any more."

"They don't mind. It's not like you're a problem, Stephanie. They probably won't even notice you're still here," Kailen reasoned.

"I guess." Stephanie didn't brig up his offer of a place to stay.

"Just play with me a little longer," Kailen said, sitting down in front of the television.

Stephanie sighed. "Alright." She sat down in front of the videogame again.

Later that night...
Monique sat in the dark, tears still stinging her eyes. She glanced at her clock. 3:44. With a shuddering sigh, she reached for her phone. Wincing at the bright screen, she opened up her contacts. When she got to Stephanie's name, she did nothing. This she did for a few minutes. Then, with a great breath to compose herself, Monique pressed the call button. She didn't really expect an answer. She wasn't sure if she wanted one.

Stephanie had gone back to her hotel for the night and settled into bed. She'd fallen asleep at a reasonable hour, but that didn't help when she was woken up at quarter to four in the morning. She groaned. Her government contacts were calling her about some other body they'd selected. She reached over to the side table. They probably wanted Melissa to- hang on, where was her phone? Stephanie opened her eyes. The phone wasn't on her bedside table. That's right, her contacts didn't... well contact her for that stuff anymore. Her sleep addled brain had defaulted to what was usually the case when her phone rang late at night. Now she was just annoyed someone had called her phone - which she shouldn't have even left on - at four in the morning. Wait but if it wasn't one of her contacts, who the hell was calling at four in the morning? She got up and fished the phone out of her jacket pocket. Monique? Why was Monique calling so late? Had something happened to her?! Awake and quite alarmed, Stephanie finally answered the ringing phone. "Hello? Monique, you okay?"
