They're in British Columbia. It's winter, and it's cold.
The government wants to get their hands on the Gifteds there. So they do that. But the Gifteds resist or run away, I guess?
That's all I got.

Monique winced and squinted as she stepped outside. She pulled her scarf tighter, starting down the snowy sidewalk. Her eyes were now beginning to adjust to the intensely bright outdoors, but it mattered little as she only watched her feet as she walked. Truthfully, she could have traveled her intended route blind-folded (and doing so might have been preferable to suffering the light reflecting off the snow) on account of how frequently she'd taken this walk in particular.
It was bitter cold out, but Monique was well-accustomed to the climate. More than her tolerance for the cold, though, had her walking to the nearby park.
She arrived at the park, finding all infrastructure buried in snow and devoid of people. Dusting the snow from a bench, she sat with a sigh, closing her eyes. She listened to the gentle breeze, relaxing on her seat.

Kailen was wearing what was probably more appropriate for autumn than winter. His jacket was zipped up to his neck, disappearing under his scarf, and he had the sense to wear a beanie, but his hands were shoved into his pockets as their only line of defense against the cold. He wore the same skater shoes he'd wear any other time of year, though he'd slipped on the ice more times than he could count. It was fortunate he had good balance, as he hadn't yet fallen. His breath was coming out in a mist, and his face felt like it was ice, but there was no way he was going home. In the last months, Kailen's relationship with his parents had drastically improved (going from 'actual hatred' to 'somewhat understanding'), but there were still times when it was rocky. Their lack of communication for the last ten years had made it impossible for things to just fix themselves so quickly, and it didn't help that he'd run out of gum. His finger was tapping anxiously on his leg, and he kept chewing his lip. At that moment, all he really wanted was a cigarette and his DS. Mostly a cigarette. And maybe a coffee, it was goddamn cold. He'd stormed out of the house not long ago, and had gone to the park - he hadn't particularly wanted to deal with people. Now that he'd been walking in the cold for a while, he'd somewhat cooled off, so when he saw a school friend, instead of turning and walking the other way, he paused. "Monique? What are you doing out here?"

Monique squeaked in surprise. When she saw that it was Kailen, however, she grinned, slightly embarrassed. "Oh, just needed to clear my head." She sniffed, rubbing at her nose. "You?"

"Something like that," Kailen agreed. He'd met the girl through Stephanie, once she'd come around to actually being honest with him. He sat down next to her. "Rough day for you?"

Monique shrugged. "It's more like... I'm avoiding the people who are having a rough day." She paused, then glanced at Kailen. "N-not that I'm trying to avoid you, if you're having a rough day. I meant other people, and their rough days, and... Never mind."
She slumped on the bench with a sputter.
"I didn't think ahead very well. I didn't even grab gloves."

Kailen grinned. "Neither did I," he admitted, shrugging off her babbling. "I didn't honestly plan to leave the house. Just kinda... happened."

"Well, you can't really plan for these things," Monique said, distracted by a bird taking flight in the distance. "Say, it's freezing out here. You want to go grab a bite somewhere warm? Or just go somewhere warm?"

Tall, blonde Stephanie Clark knocked on the smooth wooden door of the somewhat isolated building. It had been awhile since she'd shown up anywhere unannounced, but the people who lived here were like a second family to her. No. Under this new name, they were her only family. Stephanie Clark had not been born with the name Stephanie or the name Clark. The name was one she'd made up, a front she put up in front of herself to gather information, to live up to her true name: Jessica Martinez. She was a Martinez, and lying and manipulating was her family's specialty. Her grandfather and father were both skilled politicians; her mother a shrewd socialite with connections to organized crime. She had gone out into the world to prove that she could proudly take up the Martinez family mantle; that she was worthy of her parents famous name. But she hadn't been able to do it. She had neither the skill nor the lack on conscience needed to pull off what she wanted, and everything had fallen apart around her. The only person who stayed by her side was Kailen Belacqua, a boy who had promised her she didn't have to act on the whims of her family. She could be her own person. And so, with the support of the only true friend she'd ever had, Jessica chose to cut off all contact with her real family and remain here, in the only identity she'd evr truly felt happy playing: Stephanie Clark, the young highschool student and best friend of Kailen Belacqua. That was who she was now. Jessica Martinez was a thing of the past. "Hello!" She smiled when Adam answred the door. "Is Kailen around? He promised he'd call me and he hasn't."

Kailen grinned. "What, don't like the cold?" he asked. "A little bit of cold won't hurt." He still stood up.
Adam smiled at Kailen's friend. This girl was one he'd been uncertain of at first - but only because he'd been uncertain of all his son's friends. In the end, though, it was Stephanie who he felt had helped turned Kailen's life around. He was recovering from a nicotine addiction, and had friends who weren't the ones who had led him down that road in the first place. "Hey, Stephanie. No, he just went out. I think he was headed towards the park, if you want to go chase after him."

Stephanie smiled back at Kailen's father. He didn't know anything about where she came from or why she'd originally come or even her real first name and this was okay with her. When she said Kailens family adopted her, it was unofficially. She still lived out of her hotel room and looked after herself, but she was here almost every day and looked at Adam and his wife Isobel as the real parental figures she'd never had. If Kailen wasn't going to tell them her secrets, she certainly didn't want to reveal them. "Aw, again?" She joked knowingly. Kailen did this sometimes. She sighed in a falsely exasperated way. "I'll bring him back for you." she made a dramatic show of sighing again before turning around and heading out to go look for her best friend.

"Thank you, Stephanie," Adam said, smiling. "Isobel is cooking, when you come back."
