"I'll eat if you're already getting something." Lauren responded, sitting down. She looked a little better than she had when she'd gone to bed. At least, the dark circles under her eyes were gone.

"I picked some raspberries earlier, if you'd like some of those. There are also some strawberries left. I don't keep much food in the house though. There are some potatoes and yams I could bake."

"You don't need to go out of your way for anything, I do gotta go home eventually, I'll eat when I get there." Lauren answered. "Although I bet your fruit's probably the best in the country, with the green thumb you seem to have."

Frederick smiled and got up. "I guess you'll have to tell me. Do you like potatoes? I get bored in here with no company. It's no problem to make you something."

"Yeah, I do." Lauren grinned. "Thanks." She watched him make them. "Hey can I ask you a question?"

"Well it's just, you said it wasn't because you don't like people that you never leave the house. But I live nearby, and I've never seen visitors here. So why don't you ever leave the house?"

Frederick glanced at her, then turned back to what he was doing. It took him a second to answer. "It's a combination of things. The easier answer is because I have a medical condition. Have you ever heard of hemophilia?"

Frederick smirked. "Yes. Those who have it have problems with their blood clotting. I have medication, since joints often start bleeding, but if I weren't able to get to it, even just a bruise could cause serious risk to my health."

Lauren nodded and didn't push the issue, but she thought that wasn't a great explanation. It sounded no more stressful than people with fatal allergies who had to carry an epi-pen everywhere and they didn't all become hermits to avoid the smell of peanut butter, did they? "It must get lonely, cooped up in this house all the time."

"I love cop shows. Why?"

"You know the episodes where people are being stalked, and the cops advise them to stay inside, and not to do anything that might enrage the stalker?"
