Some say the Red Thread of Fate binds soulmates together. Maybe that's true, but maybe what that person was seeing was the bond of Amatores - The Eques, the fighter, the wordsmith, and his or her Litatio, the sacrifice, victim, master. These bonds are stronger than any other, and many Amatores are indeed, as the name suggests, lovers. Such is the nature of the desire to protect and to save so strong in them.
The Eques possesses an innate knowledge of language. Of words and poetry and the natural flowing of phrases. They are intelligent and fiercely loyal, with the strongest of desires to protect their Litatio from the wounds inflicted by the rival Equesi they may encounter. They are more intellectually intelligent, better with arts and maths and scholarly pursuits. They are clever and witty, quick-thinking and independent. Usually good listeners, able to perfectly understand their Amatore.
The Litatio is self-sacrificing, versed in the physical world, of pain, emotional and physical. Their scars are the testament of their trials, their pain the source of their strength. They have the desire to endure, to live for the Eques. Usually more instinctual and streetwise than the counterpart, they posses an intimate knowledge of psychological attacks. However, they rely on the support of the Eques, particularly emotionally. They are methodic and able to perfectly communicate their wishes, commands, desires with their Amatore.
Of course, personality archetypes are only the pattern. There are always exceptions to every rule, especially in humans.
Once in a lifetime there is a grand collision between Gepetto, the so called "elite" if their world, and stray rebel groups to see who is the best, who has the strongest bond. The final winning teams get a grand reward - peace, freedom from the constant fighting, a place in the history books, set up with a paradise and grand life, however thry choose to live it.
The Battles do not cause terrible damage across the land, only harm to the battlers. Each battle is in a dome of sorts, between only the four involved, invisible to the rest of the world. There are no fancy swords or ninja moves, but words and phrases, growing in power with the eloquence and poetic phrasing.
Each pair of Amatores has a sacred name with an equally sacred meaning, and each Amatore wears it upon their body, in scars or otherwise, as a symbol of their devotion, to strengthen their bond, thicken their Red Thread. The names are chosen long before they are even born, part of their destiny, and through their meeting and discovering their relationship, the name is revealed.
Good luck, friends, may thy words flow as silver and thy hearts be strong.
