Kailen twisted the ring as well, and he was somewhat surprised to find it worked. He crossed over to the man. "So what were you talking about?" he asked, crouching so that he wasn't easily seen.

"Um, pardon?" The man was very confused. "What do you mean 'Pardon'? You said you'd explain." Stephanie said, annoyed. "Explain what? I'm sorry, I don't think I've ever spoken to you."

"Who you are and what you want us to do," Kailen answered, impatient.

"What are you talking ab- Hey, those are mine!" He seemed shocked Kailen had the rings and held his own up, the same identical rings as if he'd never given them away. "But I'd never give them to people like you..." "What do you mean 'people like us'?" Stephanie huffed indignantly. He asked them for help and then he wanted to insult them? "I mean people from your time." He said dismissively. "I'd never ask anyone from this time to help me, that'd mean asking them to help make themselves cease to exist."

"Well you did ask us, and you didn't have much of a choice in the matter," Kailen said, indignantly.

"What do you mean I didn't have a lot of choice in the matter." "We mean when we left you you were dying in a back alley and you told us to come back here and talk to you." "I die in this time? Well, that's troubling..." "You didn't know? You're the one who sent us here." He sighed. "You kids really don't get this whole time travel thing yet, do you?" He sighed. "If what you say is true and I sent you here while dying, the fact that I'm alive should tell you I'm from an earlier point in time than you. You have to tell me what question's I'm supposed to be answering here, I don't know what just happened to you."

"You gave us your rings and told us to come here to talk to you. Something about fixing something," Kailen insisted.

"Yeah, I'm here because I'm trying to fix the future. You've only ever lived in this time, so you don't have a real grasp of how messed up it really is. What you know as the world is one of the worst possible outcomes this time could have taken, and I'm not sure many of us will survive the gifted hunts restarting. The people with the worst intentions came out on top, and those who had the power to fix things died or were broken by the experience. But it doesn't have to be this way. I've been going back to fix what went wrong in the past, and change the future for the better for everyone."

"And how would you do that?" Kailen questioned.

"I'm going back to the catalysts.. moments where significant lives permanantly changed the course of events. By altering these catalysts to a more favourable outcome, I can improve the total outcome of the future. Which is exactly why I'd never ask anyone from this time to do it."

"Well you did, and if you want it done so badly you'll have to do it again," Kailen said, glaring. He wanted to be home eating peanut butter pastries, not playing word games with some man who was only talking to him because he died.

"But this is part of the future. If thi works the chances of any of you actually existing are slim to nil. It wouldn't be right." What do you mean, we won't exist?" Stephanie demanded. The man sighed. "Stephanie. Clark. Do you honestly think you'd be the same person if your family hadn't put you under pressure to be like them all these years? Of course not, you'd be a completely different person. And that's even if your parents still got together at all. Or Kailen, in your case, if your older sister had never been kidnapped, do you think you'd even have been born?" "You have an older sister?" Stephanie looked at Kailen.

Kailen glanced at Stephanie, but didn't answer. He looked back at the man. "How is it any more right to erase us without even talking to us than letting us do it ourselves?"

"Because you wouldn't know if I did it. It's not like you'd die. You'd just... cease to exist. Or maybe you'll exist in a separate timeline from the true one, just because I've been doing the best I can here doesn't mean I know precisely how time works. The point is, it wouldn't hurt you any because your whole world would disappear at the same time. You'd never know anything happened at all. But if you're directly altering the timeline around yourselves, it's different. You won't belong in the timeline you create. At best you'll be stuck inside but apart from the timeline forever, not truly belonging to any one time. Or you might just disappear as soon as the timeline is no longer compatible with you."

"Well either way, you can't fix it any more, you're dead now," Kailen said, harshly.
