"Yes, but what is it you wanted to ask me? You must admit it looks a bit dodgy when a couple of people I've never met come looking for me and yet don't even know what I look like."

"Go ahead, Steph," Kailen said, having already said many times that his friend was the one who should tell it.

What? Kailen you're the one who's been talking to him all this time! What have you said? What can I not say? I can't do this when there's a precedent I don't know about! "I heard you had a lot of sway on the inside, that you can pull some strings for me."
Rick sighed. "Look, I can't help you with any gifted relatives or-"
"No no no, it's nothing like that!" Stephanie assured him. "My dad's firm specializes in genetic mutation, we're looking into gifted DNA to create our own genetically enhanced superhuman serum to sell to the US military. Unfortunately we've run out of gifted volunteers to give their blood for our work. Do you think you could procure us a blood sample for us from some of the gifteds in captivity?"

[Raven]

Kailen didn't have anything to add to that, he just stood by Stephanie's side.

"So let me get this straight." Rick said. "Your father is head of a large bio-engineering corporation, and the whole project hinges on getting Gifted blood, yes?"
"That's what I said."
"So your daddy sent you over here to find me?"
"Yes."
"Without telling you what I looked like?"

"Without telling me," Kailen corrected. "I'm just her friend."

[Gifted]

"If she'd recognized me she'dve spoken up when you said I would help you find me." Rick went to leave. "Not to mention the fact that you two ought to be in school, and that the girl is as nervous as if she'd just been thrown into a lions den - don't worry, you're not as bad at hiding it as I make it sound, you'd certainly fool an ameteur, I'm actually quite impressed - I can deduce that you're lying to me. So unless you have something you honestly want to say, I must get back to work. I have a speech to write."

"Wait," Kailen objected, but he looked at Stephanie first. She was better at this than he was. He wasn't sure what to tell him, if anything.

"Mr. Martinez!" She called, but Rick didn't look back. He pulled out his phone and dialed a number as he walked away.

[Raven]

"What are we going to tell him?" Kailen asked, quietly and desperately.

[Gifted]

"We can't for now, can't you see what he's doing? We've got to go!"

[Raven]

"What do you mean?" Kailen asked.

[Gifted]

"Oh my god Kailen, we're a couple of teenagers not in school who were nervous while talking to him, we denied knowing who he was, and I know you did not have enough money left over for those fries so he must've bought them for you. Isn't obvious what he thinks?"

[Raven]

Kailen frowned. "I already told him we're not- oh fuck. Let's go." He grabbed his bag and pulled her out of the shop.

"Oh now he gets it." Stephanie sighed and followed him into the trees. "By the way, we're never splitting up again."
