In a small valley in the Rocky Mountains, a stone two-story home with solid oak double doors sits backed against the mountainside. The nearest public road is a dirt path that lets off with a ten minute walk from the building, thick forest prevents even off-road vehicles larger than an ATV from getting any closer unless they take the private road which is always blocked off by a reinforced gate well away from the school grounds. On the other side of the valley is a grassy slope which leads down to a lake. Few who do not live there know the home exists, and fewer still know that it is, in fact, a school for gifteds. Black River Academy, known primarily as Black River or simply the River, is a sanctuary for children with supernatural abilities, helping them learn to master their powers, survive on their own, and adjust to the world they live in. Many of students consider Black River to be their home, some the first they've had. Teachers take on the responsibility of ensuring the school's safety as well as teaching the students, and many students help to protect the school or bring in new students upon graduation. All students are brought in through Xander Xavier's team, and aside from some of the teachers, Xander's team comprises the only people who know where on the map that the school actually is.

Black River was first set up twelve years ago, by Kenny Clark and his brother Adam, while teachers and students have come and gone, they remain a permanent fixture of the school, and most students are fond of the brothers. The current classes taught at the school include: agent politics, history*, gym*, first aid, power mastery and combat*, home ec*, and rudimentary math, science, and English. Required classes marked with * (all students are required to take the basics of first aid when they arrive, but students who have been there longer and do not wish to continue the course are permitted, math, English, and science can be tested out of).

It was a sunny spring morning and many of the students were enjoying being outside now that it was beginning to get warmer. As high as they were in the mountains, students were still wearing jackets and hats, and no one got too close to the icy lake, but they ran around and chatted on the grassy slope nearby. Normally, Kenny might have sat closer to where the majority of the students were, but he had received the message from Xander to expect a new student today. Thus, he was instead waiting on the front porch, watching everything with a smile on his face. Sangria chased an eleven year old up the hill, playing tag, while Maggie watched from her shaded bench. Things were peaceful. It was moments like this that made him more happy than ever he'd started this school, where kids could be kids for a change.

Kenny stood up as the car pulled up the drive. He was dressed in a button up shirt, but the top button was undone and he didn't wear a tie with it. His jeans were dark and clean, and he looked as welcoming as ever as he waited for his newest student.

Professor Viette had strung up a volleyball net and was playing volleyball with a few of her sportier students. Jade was sitting under the shade of a tree, playing blackjack with a few students.

As the principal sat on the school porch, he caught a glimpse of the same old truck that came up to the school a hundred times; a beat up silver 4x4, the back windows tinted too black to see through on either side. The mud-stained tires ground to a halt in front of the school, and a familiar figure in the drivers seat flashed a grin as she shut her truck off. "Hey Kenny," Olivia greeted as she got out of the truck. "Long time no see." Xander's right-hand woman slammed the truck's door and crossed to the other side to let out her passenger in the back. "We've just got one today. He was found sleeping in the shed behind one of our networked safehouses a couple weeks ago. Seems like a nice kid. Oh, but don't touch him." She opened the back door of her truck, allowing the light to spill in onto the unkept teenager sitting in the back.

The boy raised his hand, flinching from the light. His brown hair flopped into his face as he cringed backwards, overgrown bangs irritating his eyes. As his eyes adjusted, he opened them and took in the familiar sight of the mexican woman who'd brought him, standing next to an unfamiliar old man. "Are we hear then?" He flashed a small smile and got himself out of the truck, looking up at the pair with eager eyes. "Is this the place?"

Rick wasn't the first kid Kenny had been told not to touch - powers came in all shapes and sizes, and Kenny accepted that without asking why. He'd ask the kid about his power later. "Hey, Olivia," he greeted, then smiled at the sight of the kid. "Welcome to Black River. I'm Mr. Clark, what's your name?"
A couple of the kids had glanced over and started talking excitedly about the fact truck being there, wondering if there was a new student and if so who they were. A few pointed but no one came closer and they were too far off to really hear what they were talking about.

The new boy smiled and held out a hand for Kenny to shake. "Thank you, Mr. Clark. I'm Rick. It's a pleasure to meet you."
"Rick's a good kid." Olivia said. "The guys at the safehouse can vouch for him. I think he'll do great at your school."

"Glad to hear it," Kenny said, but he didn't return the gesture. "What's your power, Rick?" he asked.

Rick seemed to only then realized what he'd done, and quickly withdrew his hand. "Er, sorry. Still habit..." He admitted. "I... well, I make people's powers stop working. You probably shouldn't touch me if your power does anything... permanent." he admitted.

[Raven]

"It's alright," Kenny assured him. "One of my previous students had acidic skin. You'll get the hang of things around here. It's great to meet you."

He nodded. "I promise I'm not that dangerous. You get your power back as soon as I'm not touching you just, if it had permanant effect everything you've ever done gets undone." He explained. "So I try to avoid people just in case. I don't want to break something important."

[Raven]

"I understand," Kenny assured him, then carried on to Olivia, "Give Xander my best, if there's no other news."

"Will do." Olivia got back in the truck. "Talk to you later, Kenny!" She started the truck and drove away. Rick stayed close to Kenny but did not touch him.

[Raven]

Kenny waved. "Come on, I'll show you around the school," he told Rick, heading up the stairs to the front doors. "Where are you from?"

Rick grinned and hurried after the teacher. "Maryland, if you can believe that." He said. "What about you? Where are you from?"
