Willow cringed, recoiling backward, her eyes darting away. She didn't want to answer; she couldn't throw Kailen under the bus like that. Her instinct was to protect him. But she couldn't lie, either. Even if she'd tried, it would have come out awfully, and then it would only make both their situations worse. At the same time, it wasn't like her silence didn't also tell Adam what he wanted to know.

Willow, always trying to look out for others, was not put at ease by the non-answer. She got up sadly and went to empty her carefully prepared bag. She put everything in its proper place and then returned to her room.
