Several hundred years ago, magic was re-discovered as a very real, incredibly powerful force. Some societies embraced it; others shun it. Meanwhile, technology marched ever forward and became more invasive, more pervasive, and more dehumanizing. Some people thought it was going too far. The tensions between the various sides escalated and caused incredible, bloody wars many generations ago. Now there are only two nations left; The anti-technology, pro-magic country and the pro-technology, anti-magic country.
Ostensibly the two sides have had an uneasy truce and haven't fought in more than a century, but in reality both sides have a secret 'research' facility dedicated to sending in their soldiers to take key objectives from the other, and prevent their own objectives from being stolen
