"I can't imagine. Whoever this person is, you must care about them a lot." Stephanie couldn't even contemplate the kind of devotion it must take to be willing to do that for someone. She'd never had a relationship like that.

"Maybe you don't go back far enough? She might have gotten on their radar long before they did anything about it. I mean, for example, there's this one girl they've got their eye on right now. They want her for prisoner interrogation, there's too many to have people like Flare or Cody do all the torture themselves. So right now they're keeping an eye on her , feeling out what it would take to recruit her. If they can buy her off, if they need to take someone hostage, if it's less hassle just to just get someone to control her directly. They probably won't actually make their intentions known with her for at least three more months. And then if she can't be bribed, tempted or bought it'll be even longer trying to feel out her defense and determine the best way to kick her door in without her or anyone else killing them. It tends to be quite a process, you may have underestimated how long they've known your friend exists."
