Backstory: Emily had a mostly normal life. Her parents were breeders, and she loved helping out and playing with the pokemon. She went to a school full of kids who wanted to be pokemon masters and pokemon were a frequent topic of conversation as she got older and closer to the age she could finally get a starter and begin her journey. But being raised around baby pokemon, the quite, bookish girl always thought just a little differently than her peers.
“Alright class!” A substitute teacher said one morning just before her tenth birthday. “Since I don’tknow you yet why don’t we go around the class and say our names and answer a question. Oh, let’s see… how about you say your name and tell me if you could have any baby pokemon, straight out the egg, what pokemon would you want it to be?”
The other kids loved this idea “Well I’m Harry and I would want a Riolu!” One boy said excitedly.
“I’m Priscilla and I’d like a Bagon!” A girl chimed in.
“I’m Terry and Larvitar all the way!”
“Quil, and definitely a Gible for me.”
Emily sunk lower into her seat as all the kids answered one pokemon after another. She saw what they were doing. None of these kids really wanted to take care of a Gible, a Bagon, a Larvitar. They were just a means to an end. That boy didn’t really want a Larvitar; He just wanted a pokemon that would one day grow up to be Tyrannitar. Quil just wanted a Garchomp, that girl Priscilla just wanted to be able to fight with a Salemance. Why couldn’t these pokemon just be appreciated for their own sake? Why did their only worth come from the powerhouses they’d evolve into?
“Pst. Em, it’s your turn.”
Emily blushed and looked down at her hands. “Well, my name is Emily…” She said, her voice getting quieter and quieter. “And I’d like a Pichu.”
The entire class laughed. “A Pichu?!” Terry asked, “Why would you want that tiny little rat?” The class laughed again at Terry’s remark.
“Raichu isn’t even that good.” Priscilla said condescendingly.
“Not to mention there’s no guarantee your pichu will even evolve!” Another kid laughed. “What if it got stuck like that forever?”
“But I like Pichu.” Emily mumbled, but her face had gone scarlet.
“Like Pichu? Pfft.”
“It doesn’t matter if you like it, it won’t be around long anyway!”
“You’ll never become a Pokemon master talking like that, Em.”
Then the teacher called the class back to order, but Emily couldn’t get the kids words out of her head the whole day.
“And it was like they didn’t even care about their pokemon, just as long as they could become big powerful beasts as quickly as possible!” Emily was complaining to her mother and father that night around the dinner table. “And when I said I liked Pichu, they all laughed at me! They said I’d never be a pokemon master.” She pouted, staring down at her bowl of soup.
Her mother looked over at her child compassionately. “Oh hon, you understand things that even some trainers don’t. Some trainers look at pokemon and they only see stats, numbers they can raise to beat the other guy. But you see the whole creature.”
“Cheer up, champ. I think you have a better chance of being a pokemon master than any of those kids.” Her dad chimed in.
Emily perked up a little. “You really think so?” She asked.
“I’m sure of it.” Her dad ruffled her hair. She smiled.
“Thanks mom… dad.”
The day of Emily’s tenth birthday had arrived, and Emily had almost forgotten about the other kids laughing at her. Almost. As she waved to the last of her friends out the window as their mom’s car pulled away, her own mother called her back into the living room where the party decorations were still up, the half-eaten cake still sitting on the table. “We have one more present for you.” She told Emily when Emily came in.
“Well, it’s kind of a present inside a present, actually.” He father put in. He handed her a brand new backpack, perfect for taking on her pokemon journey. “Go on, open it.”
Emily eagerly looked into every pocket and flap of the backpack and found a pokedex… and a pokeball! “You got me a pokemon?!” She asked excitedly, pulling the pokeball out of the back and releasing the pokemon inside. Her eyes lit up when she saw its form.
“Pichu pi!”
“You got me a Pichu!” She squealed, picking up the tiny pokemon, her favourite pokemon, and hugging it until it scurried up onto her shoulder.
“You said you wanted one, so your father and I pulled some strings.” Her mother told her with a smile. “Now you’re all ready to start your pokemon journey.”
“I am!” She agreed. “Thank you so much mom, dad!”
“You’re very welcome, sweetie.” Her dad answered. “Now go on, go. Go out there and show them that a pokemon’s first evolution is just as important as the last.”
Emily nodded proudly. “I will!” She agreed. “You just wait! I will!”
