There was one logical place for Josh to go. The city's park had one corner that was very public with lots of people playing almost every day of the week, but there was a large part of it that never seemed occupied. It was harder to get to, and you couldn't see it from roads or even from the rest of the park because of how the path worked, so many people seemed to forget that part existed. It didn't help that the only playground in the area was made of metal, and would burn anyone who touched it on contact. It wasn't the prettiest, either, and all of those things led to it being completely and utterly abandoned. Unfortunately, that fact had also brought Josh's science partner there for the day.
Lily Cantor was the only person to visit this part of the park regularly (or at all), and she'd done so long before she needed a place to practice with her power. It was peaceful here, and she enjoyed to come to take pictures, draw, or write. She enjoyed being away from people, because she didn't really enjoy being around them. People never understood her, and too many of them were jackasses.
Four months ago, someone had invaded her area. A bunch of boys from her school who proceeded to tease her as they always did. She ignored them, until one of them grabbed her arm, demanding her attention. She'd been so frightened in that instant, panic rising inside her. She just wanted them to leave her alone. And then something happened that would get her that forever. The boy's sleeve lit on fire.
As far as the bullies were concerned, Lily had done it on purpose. She was a psychopath. Of course, they couldn't prove that any more than she could prove they bullied her. In four months, she hadn't had any problems once, all because of a happy accident that hadn't even left any real damage on her attacker. Her fire had protected her then, and she was determined to make sure it would forever. However, without her being frightened or angry, she still only managed to produce little flames - barely larger than what she could get on a match, despite four months of practice. When she was frightened or angry, she was still no better at controlling what the fire did. Still, in that part of the park, sure she was alone, she held her hands in front of her, and willed the flames to appear.
