Kenny held him tight, tears running down his own face at the quelled hope. The thing they'd both dreamed of had happened, but for a reason that shouldn't have been any more possible than the one they'd been hoping for. Why did he have to be gone? It wasn't fair.
Frederick accepted the paper, his eyes lighting up at one of the only people who ever visited with him. "Hello Lauren," he greeted cheerfully. "Would you like to sit down for a moment? I have some cheese and crackers." He motioned to the second chair on the porch, that she had never once seen occupied. "How has your day been?"

"I'd love too." Lauren sat down with Fredrick and took a cracker and a bit of cheese. "Oh you know. It's been the same as ever."
Matt didn't want to speak. He knew they were both thinking the same thing, but it was lik saying it aloud made the pain more real somehow, sharper. He couldn't bear to speak. He just sat there holding Kenny, quietly crying.

Frederick nodded, quietly encouraging her to go on if she'd care to.
"I love you, kid," Kenny murmured, but he couldn't bring himself to talk about it. If things weren't so crazy, if their life wouldn't be seen as a delusion, he'd probably get them both in therapy. But then, if their life weren't so crazy, they wouldn't need it.

Lauren nibbled at her cracker. "What about you?" She asked.
Matt nodded. "I love you, too." He whispered. He curled up close to Kenny and fell asleep there, his last tear still clinging to his eyelashes.

Freddy smiled again. "I've been good. I introduced a new flower into my garden today. It's called a bleeding heart flower - they're actually shaped like hearts. They're beautiful."
Kenny stayed there until he was sure Matt was quite asleep, then carried him back home. They could clean the church later. He laid Matt down in bed, and went across the hall to his own room so he'd be nearby when Matt woke.

"I'm sure they are. I've never known as good a gardener as you." Lauren told him with a brief smile.
Matt awoke after only two or three hours, and he hopped off the bed and wen looking for Kenny immediately. "Are we ordering pizza for dinner again?" He asked. Judas had been the family cook. So they'd been eating pizza a lot since he died.

"I don't mean to sound overconfident, but I don't believe there is one," Frederick said, smiling. "You can come see them, if you'd like."
"No, not tonight," Kenny answered. He couldn't eat pizza on his birthday. "I'm gonna try spaghetti." It wasn't exactly hard to make spaghetti. You cooked some meat, boiled noodles, and added sauce, but it was still fancier than pizza. "We can have garlic toast too."

"I would love too." Lauren answered. She enjoyed walking in his garden. Fredrick had the most beautiful garden.
"Sounds good, Kenny." He nodded. "Sounds good."

"It'll probably taste slightly less good than it sounds," Kenny joked.
"Excellent." Freddy led her to the back yard, and down the path. "So is there anything new going on?"

"Not really. Chase's class just started learning multiplication timestables, so I've been helping him with that."
Matt nodded. "I'm sure it won't be bad. You can do it, Kenny."

"Yeah? How is he doing?" Freddy asked.
"Thanks, kiddo. You wanna help me?"

"He was pretty good at math up until now. I'll see how he does with this new thing."
"Okay." Matt came over to help, looking up at Kenny and the kitchen counter.

Freddy nodded. "What about the rest of school? Is he doing well?"
Kenny smiled and got him a step stool, starting the water boiling. He had Matt handle getting the toasts ready to put in the oven while the meat cooked. He also asked Matt which spices they should use - they had tons, but Kenny had no more idea how to use them than Matt.

"I think so. I haven't seen much of it yet. He has quite the imagination and I've seen him write pretty well so I can't imagine him having too much difficulty."
"How am I supposed to know?" Matt asked.

Kenny shrugged and didn't press the issue. He'd just thought maybe they could have some fun experimenting. When it was all done, he brought everything to the table.
"That's good, I'm glad to hear it," Freddy said, and motioned to his new plant.
