"Well Madame, it appears your prowess in gathering information hasn't been... exaggerated." The young lord sat in his throne, looking very comfortable there, and his bright blue eyes pierced the woman who kneeled in front of him. He rested his head on his hand, his elbow propping his arm up on the armrest of the throne. "And what is the status of Samuel Arlyn?" "Still locked in his room, my lord." The lady answered. She wore a knights armor and sword, but a red mask with golden adornments hide her face from view. "My informants whisper that he's still as mad as they come. He hardly speaks, and fails to recognize his own brother at times. They say when he does speak, he still calls for Eric in the night. And John." The woman cast a glance back at a knight in dark armor, standing in a shadow in the corner. His armor was of the highest quality and impeccably clean, yet somehow the man still looked disheveled, staring out with hollow green eyes from behind long, stringy brown hair. A mischievous grin played about the young lord's face. "Excellent. You did your job well. Of course, spying on a nine year old and his mad older brother isn't exactly difficult. How about, we give you something more challenging, then?" "I would be honoured, Lord Ashford." "Lord Rodrick Ashford." the young lord retorted, but he appeared almost bored. "I'll be damned if I'll be referred to in the same fashion as my brother." "My apologies, Lord Rodrick." The woman answered. Her hair did not fall forward when she ducked her head as it was uncommonly short for a female, down only to just below her cheekbones. "Shouldn't you already know that? The tales call you the best in the business." "A matter of insurance, my lord. My channels are sometimes deceiving. Better an honest mistake of using a last name where it's unwanted than a grave insult by using the first." "Hey, she knows how to appease a man." He grinned at he knight behind her and nodded once before looking back to her. "So let's see if you are worth all the hype around your name, miss Madame Guillotine." The lady stood up to receive her orders from the lord. After receiving his blessing, she took her leave, walking out of his castle in disgust. This lord was nothing to her. He had nothing for her. After their father died, a man it was hard but not impossible to work with, any chance at gaining the secrets the Ashford land held died with him. The usurper held nothing with real history hidden in its walls, and she had been assured frequently that the other brother Neil was a foolish lord who would speak to no spies in his lodgings. She checked around to assure herself no one was watching and then with a rustle of a wind through dry, brittle leaves, the woman called Madame Guillotine disappeared from her road and entirely off Ashford land.
She reappeared in a shady back-alley on the land of Lady Cassandra Nagarr and, after checking she really was in the part of the kingdom she thought she was, began her way to the parts of town one was most likely to be able to buy information. Time to see if the Lady had any use for a spy.

Nicolette Nagarr was old enough to leave the castle on her own, as far as she was concerned, and with a five-year-old dragon that was no longer small enough to fit snugly in her pocket, or cling to her comfortably, she wasn't worried about what might happen to her in the streets, or even the dark alleys of her home city, a city known for tall buildings and narrow streets - designed to keep the dragons that dwelt there either high in the sky or on the ground. Her infant dragon was not yet big enough to be effected, but he was affected by the approaching winter chill. He'd managed to climb under her jacket, clinging to the front of her - much to her displeasure, she was sure she'd heard a ripping sound as he climbed to put his head on her shoulder, his long tail twining around one of her legs. It was like carrying Marshall when he was three. All the same, the young thing comforted her. The fire in his chest being so close to her own gave her thrills, her heart pumping faster, seemingly to try to keep up with his erratic beat. She'd asked her older sister once what the difference was between a dragon and a snake, besides the legs and wings. Braelynn had laughed, even Nicolette's twin sister had scoffed at her ignorance. She couldn't blame them, she had been such a foolish child. All the same, she hadn't gotten a real answer until she asked her mother. "Along with their wings and legs," Lady Cassandra had told her, "snakes have long since lost their fire. They have to lay in the sun to warm up. Even normal humans have more fire than snakes." Nicolette had simply pretended to understand what her mother had meant, it wasn't until she had a dragon of her own, that she could feel the fire coursing around them that she understood the difference between dragons and snakes: snakes might as well be dead. The girl stroked Avant's neck as she continued to walk, turning down a dark street and not stopping or even slowing down when she saw a cloaked figure ahead.

Madame Guillotine slipped into a shadow when she noted the young Lady walking down the street. This was not an area of town fit for a noble, what was she doing here? She laid a hand on her sword-hilt as she watched the girl approach an unknown man in a cloak, ready to intervene if necessary. Was the young lady not aware how many people looked at her down here not as a human being but as something to exploit? Or did she think her still-young dragon would be sufficient to protect her? She quietly watched, waiting to step in should the Lady be hurt.

Nicolette might have been a fool, but she had complete faith in her small friend, and it was clear the man ahead of her hesitated due to the scaly beast. All the same, the girl had passed him, he regained his courage, stepping forward with a raised hand. Avant hissed, the very tip of his tail flicking as he sensed the danger to his mistress. The Lady simply jerked her head down to look at her companion, and then the arm that was out of reach of the young dragon's teeth was grabbed. Nicolette gasped and turned to glare, bringing her elbow up in an attempt to hit him in the belly, the man easily blocked. "Let me go," the girl hissed, and the dragon shifted to bite at his wrist, missing by a fragment of an inch. The man reached down and yanked the young thing by the tail, dragging him off the lady. The baby's growls of indignation weren't even loud enough to be frightening, and the assailant smirked at his own foolish fear of the thing while it flailed and tried to get away, the length of his tail lashing about in the air. The tip found the man's cheek, slicing it open cleaner than the sharpest dagger, but it did no good. The man simply shook his captive lizard, causing the poor thing to squeak in pain. "Stop," Nicolette demanded. "Let us go." She too struggled against the grasp, hitting and grabbing at his arm in the hope that he would let her or her dragon go.

Shaking her head at Lady Nicolette's foolishness, she decided it was time to intervene. Stepping from her shadow she drew her sword in one swift motion and rested the blade against the mans throat, the cold metal touching his skin. Her eyes narrowed behind the mask. "I suggest you listen to the young lady." She said, eyes piercing into his. "Or you may no leave this alleyway with your life."

The man's jaw tightened, then his grip slowly loosened on both of them, the dragon slipping to the ground and returning to curl around his lady's leg, growling at the man. Nicolette pulled away and picked up her baby, taking several steps to get far out of his reach. "Thank you, ma'am..."

"Glad to be of service, Lady Nagarr." She put her sword back in its sheath and inclined her head in respect. "A noble young girl ought not to be walking down these streets by herself. May I accompany you?"

The young lady hesitated, but then nodded, trusting her both as a woman and her savior. "Yes, I'd like that." The man scattered, and finally the dragon stopped it's low hum. "What is your name?"

"The people of these parts call me Madame Guillotine, m'lady." She answered idly.

"Madame Guillotine? That's a strange name," Nicolette said, raising an eyebrow. She continued walking, slowly to make sure this Madame Guillotine could keep up.

"It's foreign, yes." She agreed, staying in pace with Nicolette. She didn't mind people seeing her. It was nice to show she really existed once in awhile, that she was more than just a legend.

It was quiet except for the low hum that emanated from the dragon, but after three blocks Nicolette suddenly stopped. "Wait. Madame Guillotine as in..." She glanced at the other woman, seeming to see her with new eyes.

She laughed. "Yes, m'lady. That is correct." She answered. "I traveled down here recently to see if my skills were needed, and it appears it was fortunate I did."

Nicolette shook her head, Avant twining around her legs as she stood still. "It is a pleasure to meet one so famed as yourself, Madame, I count myself lucky at having been at the right side of your blade. I don't suppose you would say what brings you to these parts?"
