✧ At twenty-five, Kenny had been struck with an idea and, always the narcissist, the idea of proclaiming himself a God appealed. Kenny Clark was everything a cult leader needed to be. He was charismatic and controlling, he knew the secrets of manipulating people. He had the desire and the drive, and he was gifted with the power to change memories.
It took him a month to decide exactly how he would do it, and when he did, he took to the streets. He dressed down, but he was still clearly better off than most of the people there. Then he found his one. He had the same scars Kenny remembered from his brother, but the man was scratching and clearly going through hell. Kenny sat down beside him, ignoring the grime he was sitting on. "What's your name?" He asked, setting down a twenty dollar bill where it the other man could easily reach it
"Nathaniel." He took the money, not feeling at all threatened by the newcomer.
Kenny smiled. "It's wonderful to meet you, Nathaniel. Are you trying to get clean?" The druggie nodded, looking a little spiteful of that fact. "Well, tell you what. If you truly want it, I would like to help you achieve it."
"Why?" A mixture of confusion, suspicion, and disbelief prompted the question.
"Because your heart is pure, and I would like to see all my flock happy and healthy, and doing good in the world." Kenny pulled out a chain with what those particularly knowledgeable in symbols would recognize as a sun cross, though his was unique in that the circle held a four pointed star. He'd bought a number of those simple bronze symbols weeks earlier, and he intended to use them to their full potential. "Hold this, and look at me. Do you truly want to be free of this plague?"
Nathaniel did as instructed, and as he remembered it, just like that, all desire for the drug vanished. Another week passed as Kenny helped Nathaniel, remarkably quickly, become adapted enough to come with him to help others. The chain that Kenny had him hold that first day became his, and he always had it.
Kenny was twenty-six when he brought Nathaniel to a nearby college to recruit some more sheep.
