The things that go bump in the night were always children tales, passed down from the dark ages. There were always random killings but with the publics awareness of the evils of man they never seemed to notice what was growing beneath them. Then the killings grew exponentially and the recorded proof was too much to ignore. Humans realized that they were no longer the top predator. These creatures multiplied and they people couldn't keep up. Wars broke out in the cities and suburbs. Safe zones were made and destroyed and humans slowly just lost their ability to fight at scale they once were. With major governments in a coup the people where left to defend themselves. However, to ever battle there is more than one side. Who's to say that these monsters have any less right to survive, even if means the death of others? Some Basics - Detailed intros for your characters. Supernatural characters can be played as well as humans. NPCs can also be used, just be sure to keep your posts understandable. Any character that is shown to have consciousness of itself and the world around it are allowed to be played. Others (creatures whose actions can be compared to that of an animal) will be left as NPCs. Debates about if a creature is playable will be brought to me(message me(skype or text)) and we'll sort it out together. Starting Point - We'll be starting in the city Layton, big enough to be considered a city but small enough to not have any buildings over eight levels high. It could be better described as a town that didn't stop growing. There was once a military presence here but when the capital started to fall, the soldiers moved to an area deemed more important, leaving the city in the hands of those with the fire power or the creatures. However, even though the military has been gone for months, they have left evidence of their presence. From broken down barricades to burnt up buildings, the city had definitely seen more stable days. The south side of the city is completely run by creatures. Even though there is rarely human prey in this area the creatures are far from civil with each other. In all other parts of the city, especially in the downtown area where supplies are most plentiful, hunting and fighting is a non stop affair. Groups of humans have their strongholds but after months without government support, they're being forced to come out of hiding. Outside of the city there is rumor of better living but also rumor of creatures far worse than those who live in the city. Basics of Layton - Layton is a city that was came into existence in the late 1800s after silver was discovered in the mountains. In ten years Layton went from a population of three hundred to a population of thirty-six thousand. With the river running through the city used to ship the seemingly endless amount of silver, it seems as if the success of Layton would never end. However, when the mine ran dry in the 1970s, the now two-hundred thousand population city began to fall, sending Layton into an era of minor depression. Still, Layton pushed on and before the creatures got out of control they were an important city in the area for medical treatment as well as higher education. SIDE NOTES - This roleplay is gonna be more than Humans against Creatures. Humans will fight humans, creatures will fight creatures. There will be gangs of thugs on both sides. There will be fighters and those that just give in. The amount of character diversity in this thread is limitless. Let's take advantage of that. If you have a human that is fighting for creatures or vice versa, they better have a damn good reason to do so. You need to bring it by the creator of the page(me) before you do so. We need just normal people and creatures before we add in specials. No creatures that are specific to one fandom(Like Weeping Angels, Tribbles, etc). Only creatures with lore or lore like backgrounds are allowed. Feel free to put in a place holder for your intro post. ReferenceHeart of Layton Map - i.imgur.com/GGwc83V.jpg

Neon's Cahracters (will flesh out later)
Edrin is a shape-shifter, widely considered to be a "creature," in spite of the fact that he can never be anything more than human. He was too human, and far too fond of humans for the creatures to accept him welcomingly. He fell in love with and befriended too many humans to fight them. He doesnt enjoy fighting, but he will for the humans, and especially the one he's in love with, even if he knows they're never meant to be (the dude's straight after all).
Vlad: a human with unnatural abilities. Tortured as a boy to become a tool for the royals, he lost any fleeting love he had for humanity. They considered him a monster, and pushed him in with the creatures, and with them he found comfort and solace. His unique skills made not only for an invaluable asset for protection, but as a weapon primed for mass casualties with little effort.
Thinking of adding a lover or daughter for vladdy. If there be anyone you want me to add lemme know

Seamus & Skyler
Irish twins Seamus and Skyler were never quite ready for the world to go to shit. Though unprepared would be an understatement, they have somehow managed to survive this long with Skyler's quick thinking and Seamus's ability to see the positive side in everything; and by everything, he means murder. Though there is safety in numbers, the boys tend to keep to themselves, Skyler having trouble socializing and Seamus having trouble not steal, brawling, and stabbing others. In their late teens they have the a lot to fear but fast feet to keep them away. Even though Seamus does have the tendency to kill first and never ask questions, his protective instinct over his slightly younger brother keeps them working together.
Shay
A former student just entering her mid twenties, Shay is a hunter. Spending a good time of her childhood and all of her teen years learning to hunt the supernatural, Shay was quite prepared for the world to turn. Teaming up with her best friend, her old jeep, and a dog with a fake service companion vest, she's on her way to kill every last super out there. Shay has a liking for archery and tends to stay away from guns when needed, feeling that they are a waste of resources.

Lists first because I love lists.
Ryan Villein: Gang member fighting to bring down the creatures who killed his girlfriend, is not going to let anything stand in his way. He secured a city block with his gang in the first few weeks and is working to set up some semblance of order.
Katrina Storm: vampire. While she is affiliated with creatures of her own kind, her personal goal is to prevent death all around.
Benjamin Belacqua: sixteen year old boy searching for his sister. He was separated from her before the fall due to a court hearing regarding his abusive father. He has been in foster care for months, but after the fall, he and his foster brother hot wired a car and started searching for Isobel and Justin.
Francis Foster: Ben's foster brother, eighteen years old. Came back for his brothers when stuff started happening, especially since he'd only been gone a couple days. He insisted on filling the trunk with weapons and ammunition. Due to a shared "delusion" between his parents, Francis was raised being taught how to fight super natural creatures. He's spend the time since the reveal of such creatures gloating teaching Ben what he knows. However, he was never taught how to deal with the fall of society, and they have a severe shortage of food and water. He made sure their car has a little door to the trunk in the back seat behind the middle seat/arm rest, so they can get to the bulk of their weapons without getting out. They each have a gun and a knife on them. He's looking for their third brother, Justin.
Adam Clark: Eleven-year-old twin brother of Kenny Clark. Had to flee their home in terror after their father was turned into a zombie. He has a backpack with some matches, warmer clothes, a bottle each of water and gatorade, and a couple dozen packaged food products such as granola bars and fruit snacks. He also stole his father's pistol, but it only has eight bullets and he isn't very good with it. He has a Swiss army knife in his pocket. He's as well prepared as he could be on such short notice, since he was so obsessed with a zombie apocalypse. If he'd had time to form a proper barrier, they likely would have lasted for a great length of time before having to come out. Needless to say, he no longer finds the idea of his apocalypse plans amusing.
Kenny Clark: Identical twin of Adam. His backpack contains warm clothes, two bottles (one of water, one of gatorade), a dozen or so packaged food products, including a few cans of fruit and beef jerky, a flashlight and a pocket knife. He also thought to bring some bandaids, including larger bandage pads, though they won't do much good if they get truly hurt.
Sumner: Vampire. Was kicked out of her coven for trying to obtain a child, since the only way an undead creature like herself can do so is by stealing one. She made her own coven of rejects. She desperately wants a baby, and will do just about anything to get one. She lets the werewolf think he's in charge, while manipulating him from the side.
Astin: Werewolf. Joined Sumner's coven years ago after fleeing his pack. He's too dominant to accept being anything but alpha, however, at the time he was too small to actually take the position in his pack. After attempting to stab his alpha in the back, he had to choose to either run or die. He's now an outcast, not allowed on any werewolf land. He's now the more 'typical' werewolf encounter, since most think of werewolves as solitary, volatile creatures.
Artemis: Half-Demon, half-angel, raised by human. Anything about her inherent nature, if there were one, has been eliminated by her mixed blood, but if there is anything she's learned from her caretaker, it's that humans always look at the bad side of things. It didn't matter that she was an angel, because she was a demon, and she looked like one. She was forced to deny everything she was constantly reminded she was. As well as trying to suppress demonic urges, Artemis learned that the only way to deal with a human was to use them. That if she didn't look out for herself, no one would.

So I shall have three characters, two female, one male, all human. Will intro them later, just doing a quick couple sentences for the moment.
Isobel Belacqua: Teenage girl who's barricaded herself on the second floor of her house and destroyed the stairs. When the crisis first started she filled the bathtub and as many jugs as she could find with water until the plumbing stopped working and the water ran out. Because of this clean water has yet to become a problem for her, but she's running very low on food and will have to leave her hideaway soon to find some.
Opal: This is not her actual name. She was convicted of serial murder and was en route to the prison when the crisis started. The police car she was in was attacked by two vampires and she was nearly killed until the one attacking her was distracted by a cop shooting at it. While the two vampires fed on the cops, she got away. She managed to break the chain holding the handcuffs together so she has full use of her hands but has not been able to get the bracelets off. She is very proficient with a knife, gun and knows her medicine well enough to poison someone, but she is currently very weak, has no supplies or allies and has to hide her identity from the humans with a pseudonym because if she said her real name they would know from the news she is a convicted serial murderer. Her real name is Tammy Felton.
Justin Cross: Francis and Ben's foster brother, he completes the trio. His parents were good, honest cops and he idolized them when he was younger. However, his dad refused a bribe from the wrong people and both parents were murdered while Justin was at school. Justin was adopted by another set of parents, a horribly abusive couple of police officers that made it very clear Justins dad was the exception, not the rule. With his entire worldview dsmantled Justin began to lash out and hate the world, and a gang picked him up and taught him to use his anger as a weapon. He's now a hot-tempered, impulsive fighter who's almost as dangerous to allies as he is to enemies. He's holed up in a bar with his gang, waiting for his adopted brothers to appear.

Anna Parrish: A hunter in her mid twenties. She was raised to hunt the supernatural and has been doing so with her best friend Shay for quite some time now. They travel in an old jeep cherokee with a karelian bear dog named Backup. Well versed in hand to hand combat and firearms. She's pretty comfortable with the way things are right now, as it's basically turned the world to one giant hunting case, and is confident in her ability not to die. Sometimes more confident than she ought to be.
Zeph: Zeph is an avian -- a humanoid creature with wings sprouting from his back and a somewhat beak-like mouth (think owl). Avians are mostly solitary creatures, having a cultural tendency toward backstabbing, and are booted from the nest at very young ages so as to avoid the fledglings trying to overthrow/kill their parents. Family bonds are tenuous at best, and the fledglings name themselves. It's not at all unheard of for them to act as mercenary assassins or scouts once they've grown some, especially in these times, selling their skills to whoever will pay the most, though they don't often team up unless it's somehow in their best interest. Mate pairs are extremely temporary. They tend to have more acute senses, although that's only partially because of their species and more out of necessity and habit. Their diet is very similar to humans with the addition of the many raw animals that they hunt and eat. Zeph is a bit of an anomaly, traveling with a younger avian and teaching her some of what he knows. They met when she was trying to rob his camp while he was asleep. Once he woke up, she tried to kill him even though she was obviously not strong enough to do so, and he admired her spunk. He could have killed her, but he didn't, and she started following him. He found himself only mildly irritated, and she kinda grew on him. They're more or less friends.
Miri: Miri is an avian who's about twelve years old. She's pretty spirited and has been travelling with Zeph since she was fairly fresh out of the nest (they're usually kicked out somewhere between 6 and 9 years old). She was pretty desperate when she tried to rob him and originally stuck with him because if he wasn't going to kill her (which he certainly could have) then maybe she could pick up a few tricks from him and avoid starving.

It had been three days since the last live emergency broadcast. The only sounds left on the radio were the government issued warning messages, telling citizens to remain in their homes and wait for military assistance. Sadly, the most recent military presence left in Layton was the now nonexistent force that the radio loved to talk about. Luckily, Shay and Anna had their own music to play on their post-apocalyptic road trip. They had always driven together like this, even before things got out of hand. Going state to state, they’d hunt whatever threatened their people. However, now that the entire world had turned to shit, every day became a hunt, and there were no longer days to celebrate. Yet this evening, with a major hunt done and a murderous creature stopped, they couldn’t help but be proud. Their clothes were stained bloody and the scrapes, cuts and bruises were easily visible but the light smile on Shay’s face shown through her dirt covered face, showing that just maybe, the world would be getting better. In the back of the car their dog, who was in no better shape than them, stuck his head out the window. This moment brought back a slight sense of normalcy, and though it wouldn’t last long, it was something to enjoy. The trees began to give out to abandoned houses and eventually turned into torn up suburbs. Turning her lights off Shay looked to her partner “If there’s anyone around here they’re gonna know that we’re here already. We need shelter with a safe place for Jeeps.” Shay paused, looking around the block “Yah ready?”

Anna sat back in the passenger's seat of the jeep, one hand idly tapping the armrest to the beat of the music coming in through the speakers, watching the scenery pass by out the window. For a moment, it was just like the good ol' days. Back when there'd only been maybe one homocidal freak of nature running amok per town instead of several small gangs of them and the human race wasn't on its way to being wiped out completely. The good ol' days.
As it became clear that they were making their way into a town, Anna started paying more attention to their surroundings. Cities used to mean safety, but since the world had gone to hell there were quite a few places where they could be more dangerous than trying to make it on your own in the woods between. People were hungry and low on supplies and there had been encounters that lead Anna to question just how different humans were from the supes that she and Shay hunted.
The road went dark, and Anna glanced over to Shay. "Born ready." She answered, reaching into the back seat to give Backup a scratch and also to retrieve her gun from the floor. Another survey around the neighborhood they were in, and she pointed to a small white house about a block down. "What about that one?" She asked. The driveway immediately adjacent led to a garage just behind the house, the handle on the outside implying that it could be opened manually. It looked like the neighborhood had been a quiet one, back in the day when people had ruled everything. Now it was just trashed.
---
Elsewhere, a man and his dog walked into a convenience store, a gun slung over the man's shoulders, and the dog's ears pricked up as it remained wary of any danger. The pair of them were raiders, picking clean the stores that most people wouldn't venture into anymore and trading the goods at a steep gain. It didn't work as well in Layton as it did in some of the smaller towns of the surrounding area, but it was time for a restock and they were making a stop at every place they saw on the way out of town. All in all, the store was a dud--all they found was a long forgotten bottle of sweet tea and a snack sized package of cheetos--and the man left in a slightly worse mood than he had been when he arrived.
Everything was quiet, save for the sound of the wind running through the leaves, and in the muddy shade of twilight, the man didn't notice the shadow growing larger under him until the sound of wingbeats caught his attention. By then, he didn't have enough time to get his hands on the gun on his back before strong arms locked around his torso, hauling him upward. His dog started barking and made it a couple yards away before it too was snatched up by a much smaller shape, barking all the while. The man struggled, quickly becoming very, very afraid as the ground seemed farther and farther away. "Stop!" He shouted, even as he was held fast. "Let me go!"
The chest he was pinned to rumbled with laughter, and he knew he'd made a big mistake when he heard the low "Yeah, sure." His captor's arms let him loose and he could only remember panic before he hit the ground.
The dog was still barking, and didn't stop until it, too, hit the unforgiving asphalt below.
Miri had already landed by the time Zeph was folding tawny wings back against his body, and was using the knife at her belt to start ripping the bulldog open. She had a knack for keeping the blood that came pouring out of the small, furry body off of her clothes, something that he would be lying to say he didn't envy a bit. Every article of clothing he owned had bloodstains on it, which wasn't uncommon among his species, but did occasionally make negotiating with other species a little more difficult. She started digging in, and he took a quick survey of their surroundings. Still in that convenience store parking lot, but the buildings on either side offered reasonable protection. At least they weren't exactly out in the open. Most creatures who wanted to pick a fight wouldn't do it while they were eating unless they were desperate, and at that moment they had plenty to share.
Zeph ripped off a chunk of the man and started eating, idly going through his belongings with a bit of meat hanging out of his mouth. The wallet was first, more out of curiosity than for raiding's sake. Money wasn't really currency these days. "Apparently the guy's name was Carl." He said out loud, after he'd swallowed what he'd bitten off.
Miri made a little 'hmph' noise. "Well. Thanks, Carl." She said, smirking slightly.
Zeph went through his bag next. "Ha!" He exclaimed, lifting the sweet tea that had somehow survived the fall over his head. "Carl's a real pal." He opened it and took a long drink before offering it to Miri, who took it from him. They shared their meal in near silence, keeping an eye on the potential entries to the parking lot.

There was a very short list of people Ryan Villein cared about - there were generals, like children and innocent people, the weak who he strove to protect, but as far as specific people he could name went, there were really only two: Tobias Cruz and Katrina Storm. The former was safe and well, staying with Ryan in the heavily defended bank that the gang had taken control of the first day after the fall. There was little use for money now, but the already-installed security of a bank, especially a bank vault, was something that Ryan hadn't underestimated. But the second person on his list had never made it to the bank.
Ryan hadn't even believed in the stories yet. The various creatures hadn't received much publicity, and he had wanted to make a special night. It was a fact of their relationship that expensive hadn't impressed Katrina, which was fortunate, since Ryan wasn't exactly the richest person in the world. Katrina had come from a well-off family, and though she'd grown up going to fancy restaurants and getting expensive gifts, she'd seen the unhappiness in her family. It was the little things, she'd always said, that mattered the most. That was why they had been in the park that night, Ryan brushing off the warnings as rival gangs messing with them. He should have listened, and he would have done anything to take it back. It was too late by then, in the middle of their picnic, the young couple had been set upon by a small coven. Katrina was the first victim, though there had been others. Some of the other citizens who had been there had made it out with Ryan, but all of them faced the trauma of seeing people torn apart and bled dry. None of them, especially not Ryan, ever guessed that the victims that day may have lived.
So Ryan's list of two became a single name. The name of the fifteen year old boy who stood slightly behind Ryan as they headed down the alley towards the bank in the heart of Layton. They both held guns, Ryan with slightly more familiarity, though both of them hoping the younger boy wouldn't have to use his. They each had a water bottle and a couple cereal bars in case something happened, but it wasn't something they expected. Still, both of them froze when they heard a noise nearby. Ryan held a finger to his lips. Toby nodded, holding his gun at the ready and trusting the other boy with his life, a burden Mr. Villein wasn't sure he deserved. The older man still crept forward, looking all around for the source of the noise.
