Had I really fallen asleep outside? It was raining too boot. Blinking the sleep from my eyes, I started back through the trees. I could already see the edge. That made sense. I was probably in my dad's back yard... I'd moved not a moment too soon, because a second after I'd gotten up, the world stood still in a flash of light and blazing heat, which struck the spot where I'd been moments before. A crash of thunder was almost immediate. I was too shocked - literally - to scream. It didn't hurt, exactly, though part of my brain assured me that I was smoking, and would be on fire if not for the rain. That was definitely true of the psych of ground behind me - now in front of me. I saw a flicker of flame, or maybe just the imprint of the lightning bolt on my retinas, and lots of smoke rose up. A cloud of ash fell towards the forest floor (the dirt of my dad's back yard, no need to be dramatic) from the vaporized tree branches overhead. I couldn't move, though I knew I should get inside before I got struck again. It didn't even make sense. I was among the trees, they should have been shocked, not me...

"Hey, lady!" A girl with black hair down to her shoulder, dark blue eyes and a big smile on her face shouted at her. "Think you could stop this storm for little ol' me?" She giggled. She was quite pretty, and looked to be about thirteen. "Wait..." She frowned. "Wow! How'd you get struck by lightning and survive if you don't have electricity or weather powers? I thought you had electricity or weather powers that would make so much more sense, I thought you'd die if you were struck by lightning. Don't you die when you get struck by lightning?" She giggled, concluding her rambling.

This was not dad's back yard. "Uh. Actually there's a good survival rate for people who get struck by lightening, so long as they receive medical care soon enough." Most people weren't still standing that soon after though.

I raised my hand to my neck and took my pulse. "No need. I'm fine. Thank you, though."

"Oh o-" The girl suddenly stopped and turned, as if she heard something worrisome. Then she looked back and grabbed you by the shirt collar. She lowered her voice. "Listen, I was never here, okay? If someone comes asking for me you didn't see anyone. Okay?"

"Okay, but why?" Was she on the run? Was she a criminal? The girl was only thirteen, what the hell was going on?

"Yes and yes." She snapped. She withdrew a knife and pointed it at Raven for a moment, but then looked back in worry and took off. "Nice talking to you!" She called back cheerfully.

Woah woah woah. I was dreaming. That was the only explanation. I was dreaming and I'd just met Ruby. What. I looked back in the direction she was running from. If Ruby was running from it, it was on my side.

a brown-haired boy of about eleven came around the corner. He had a round, chubby face, giving him a cute childish look. He wore army books and black pants, a black shirt and a black and gold overshirt he had draped over his shoulders. He looked to be about 11. The boy looked very worried, and was hugging the building, which had an awning jutting out over it protecting people from the rain. "Hey there!" He called with a grin. "Did you make that lightning?"

"No, I didn't," I answered, coming closer. "Sorry." Who could this be...?

"I can't really say. Usually there's more than one bolt... What do you mean start over?"

"Aw, see I'm doing God's work out here." He replied cheerfully. "Tracking a girl named Ruby Crockford. If I'm attacked my power automatically send me back to my computer terminal and I gotta start all over, see? I know she's here somewhere."

That was so strange. "Isn't it kind of dangerous tracking a mind reader if you can't get hurt?" I asked
