Defense Against the Dark Arts

Professor Clapp made her way down the rows of tables, examining the damage from the previous class. Only a handful of classes had gone through her class room today and yet it seemed as if and angry hippogriff decided to knock everything to the ground. Papers were scattered, ink spilled, and a handful a singed desks were just the start of the mess that had become her classroom. It was not as if it hadn't been expected. With Seventh years prepping for their NEWTS, it was expected for this kind of mess to be left. Emilia took her wand from her belt loop and gave it a quick wave. The tables began to sud up and the papers stacked themselves on the top of her desk. As she reached the front of the room, the pink bubbles on the top of the desks disappeared and shown brightly, spotless once again. She put her wand back in it's holster on her belt loop and sat on top of her desk, sorting through the papers as she waited for her first batch of first years to arrive.

With the fright last period, Kenny was the first to arrive to this class, especially since this professor was head of Slytherin house and the deputy headmistress. Kenny sat in the closest seat to the door, and tried to slow his breathing.

Though it was August's first instinct to sit in the front of the classroom, she truly did not want to be at the center of her aunt's attention. She decided to sit in the second to last row. Close to the door but far enough away to get a fair warning if anyone entered.

Evangeline entered next and sat directly in front, Lynn sat on one side of her brother. Kenny smiled at her.

Nikki came into the class eagerly and sat right at the front. She couldn't wait for the class to start.

Andrea wandered in with a smile and sat right in the middle of the room. Not too close to the front that the kids would think her a nerd, not too close to the back for the teachers to think she was a delinquent. It was such an automatic decision she didn't even have to think about it.

Evangeline glanced at Nikki. "Hopefully this class will be better."

[Sar]

As the seats began to fill, Professor Clapp stood up and looked across her room. "Welcome to your first day of defense against the dark arts!" Emilia said, loud enough to go over her students last minute conversations. "Though this class is mandatory until sixth year, I hope to watch all of you grow into great witches and wizards during all seven of your years at Hogwarts. The first two weeks will be lecture based so there will be a bit more assigned reading than the rest of the term. However, once you do your reading and turn in your safety essay, at the end of week two we will start with some basic protection and by the end of the term some of you may even get into some offensive spells," Emilia paused for those taking notes before continuing "I hope for this class to be a safe and fun place for us all to learn and ask questions, but before we start on fun we have to discuss safety!" With that she started on the first safety lecture of the year, the basics of wand moving and why not to point it anywhere but your target and other basic ideas that were probably not even touched in Charms class.

August listened to the lecture and took notes quietly. Not have any real questions.

Nikki took diligent notes, but it wasn't necessary as she remembered most of it. She couldn't wait to start really doing magic in this class.

Evangeline had a piece of paper out, but the entire class period she didn't write anything down. Kenny took better notes than Lynn, mostly because he was scared of losing more points.

[Sar]

As Emilia reached the end of the lecture she had ten minutes left over. Before she was going to dismiss the class, not too worried since it was lunch next, she said "Now, does anyone have any question? Anything about this class, another, myself, the school, or anything at all?"

[Raven]

"Is defense against the dark arts your favorite subject," Evangeline asked after raising her hand.

[Sar]

Emilia paused before answering "It's tied for favorite with muggle studies. Though the muggle studies classes I had in school are a lot different from here. So at Hogwarts muggle studies is my favorite," She backed up and sat on her desk again "Anything else that anyone wants to ask?"

[Raven]

"Do you like being head of Slytherin house?" Kenny asked.

[Sar]

Without hesitation Emilia said "Yes! I'm very excited to be able to take care of the house that took care of me while I attended Hogwarts." she then added "But that will never give unfair treatment to my house, so the other houses need not worry. Any other last minute questions?"

[Raven]

"Do you have any advice to us as first years?" Evangeline questioned
