You don't hear about the betting ring without being a part of it.
These games are unruly and awful.
Out of a large pool, each better chooses a team of three after seeing an interview and a show of skills. The contestants will be put in a large arena, where they will fight to the death. They will not know which team they are part of unless they can work it out through clues given by their handler. At the end, when only contestants from one team have survived, the handler of the team will be announced the winner, and will receive all benefits.
How could anyone be okay with treating anyone this way?
All contestants must be part of one team, and one team only. No switches, additions, or exceptions will be made, except in the rare case of a better being found guilty of betrayal. Betrayers will be will be punished without mercy, as will all in connection to the betrayer, and at that time switches or additions may be made in regards to the betrayer's team. If at any point a contestant does not have a handler, they will be killed.
It makes me sick.
At the end of the round, what happens to the survivors is up to the winner. They may be offered a place at the betting table, released, or killed as is deemed necessary. Any survivors deemed a threat to the Ring will be killed immediately.
But there's no one to stop it.
Happy betting.

Jade was a gambler first and foremost. The woman who had once gone by Ace frequented every underground illegal betting ring and casino there was. If there was money to be won, she was there. Dog-fighting, cockfighting, she'd wager on anything once. But none of her contacts had ever mentioned this. The ultimate high-stakes betting game. At least, not until today.
She'd awoken in the bed she shared with her husband only to find the other side cold. That was disappointing. He must have gone to work early today. She got out of bed and put on a black belly shirt tank top and dark blue jean capris. She'd long since regained her good looks since having a child fifteen years before, and she still used her body to get her way whenever she could.
She'd left her bedroom and decided to call Cody's sister Mia. Maybe she'd know when he'd be back.To her surprise, Mia didn't answer her phone. Stephanie had stopped answering awhile go, so Jade hung up, wondering what she was supposed to do. And hat's when her phone rang. "Hello?" She answered. It was one of the men she'd gambled with just last week. She knew him well. "Ah, Miss Xavier-Clark." "How'd you get this number?" She asked, getting straight to the point. "Your husbands phone." Jade's eyes widened as the man began to explain. Any anger at the kidnapping of her family dissipated when she found out the stakes. The most intense, high stakes gambling one could ever experience. The very thought gave her a rush. This would be the best, the biggest gamble of her life. In no time at all, she was at the betting ring.
She was intrigued to see she knew a rather large portion of the contestants. Cody, Mia and Stephanie were down there, as was an old friend from her teenage years, Leia Belacqua. Well, that certainly gave her an edge in the wagers.

"Hey mom, I'm going over to Stephanie's today. I'll be careful, but I'll need you to come pick me up later. I'll text you her address later so you can. Love you, bye." Kailen hung up the phone, frowning since his mother hadn't answered. He shook his head. Too many weird things had happened that day, and he didn't want to deal with any of them. Besides, it wasn't a big deal. His mother hadn't answered the phone (she'd probably been finishing up some icing or something) and Stephanie hadn't been to school that day, but she'd still invited him over (he figured she probably just decided not to come, since she'd already taken most of her classes online). It was still weird to go to her place, though.
The hotel she was staying at was just a few blocks from their school, so it was an easy walk for him. He headed right up, since he'd gotten the room number from her earlier. He checked it in his phone, and didn't notice for a minute that the elevator had an out of order sign on it. He frowned and went to the stairs, the door swinging shut behind him just fast enough for him to not hear the elevator ding as it opened behind him. He had to go all the way to the seventh floor by stairs. Kailen wondered if there really hadn't been any rooms closer to the ground for Stephanie to get.
A petite woman a foot shorter than he was descended the stairs ahead of him. Kailen didn't realize that he stopped to watch her. She was wearing blue and black, and the colors seemed to match her, though he couldn't say why he thought so. Her long black hair fell forward into her face as she watched her feet, though she seemed very steady since she was wearing flats. The little clicking sounds of her hard soles against the stone stairs were the only noises to be heard. The woman looked up and met his eyes with her own bright blue ones, and Kailen's skin started to tingle. He'd seen her before - just glimpses here and there, but he was sure she was following him. Who was she? Was she part of Stephanie's family? Blue light entered his field of vision. Then pain. Darkness.
An hour later, Isobel received a text from Kailen's phone with a home address.

Elizavetta was at home, cleaning up the apartment a bit before Francis got home from work. She wanted to surprise him with a clean house and a nice dinner, like a good wife (though she was certainly not that) would. She figured that since lately they only ever saw each other between his job and then hers at night, they could at least have a decent dinner together. She was humming a song happily, and did not notice the intruder to their home. She did not notice the door to the room open. All she saw was a flash of light and felt intense pain, and felt the urge to scream. Then she saw nothing.

Francis hadn't even gotten out of his truck by the time he noticed something was off. The front curtains were drawn shut. Eliza knew he hated that - Francis liked to see inside and outside of his house. If there were ever someone watching him, he would know, and he would know before they broke down his front door or ambushed him from inside his own house. An extra thrill of fear went through him because though he hadn't been telling Eliza, someone had been following them. He wasn't sure which one of them the woman was after - he saw her occasionally when he was alone, but whenever they were together he always seemed to catch a glimpse of the woman. And now there was something weird about his house. The door burst open and Francis hesitated before checking the sides and stepping in. He didn't even make it to the kitchen where Eliza was unconscious before movement caught his eye, he turned, saw just a bit of black and blue. Then there was a sharp pain, bright light, and he fell to the floor unconscious.

Isobel didn't see anything peculiar about the days events. She checked the text from her son and smiled. She had a delivery to make around there anyway. She loaded the ice cream cake into the car and drove over to pick up her son. She left everything in the car as she made it up the hotel steps. It was a long way up, but she eventually made it up to the room. She knocked on the door Kailen told her was Stephanies, but the door never opened. Frowning, Isobel knocked again. Where were they? She heard footsteps behind her and smiled. They were probably just getting here now! "Hey Kaile-" It wasn't Kailen! It was just a woman. "Sorry, I thought you were-" There was a flash of blue light and Isobel fell unconscious.

Anya was at home, as always, while her significant other Jeremiah was at work. She very rarely left the house, instead playing the perfect housewife. Besides, it would be unsafe to leave, since the wings which sprouted from her back made her an immediate target. Instead, she began making him and his daughter a nice dinner.
She liked Nikka, his daughter, but was always worried the feeling wasn't mutual.

Nikola slid in through the back door, shutting it quietly behind her. She stepped into the kitchen, her eyes on her father's girlfriend. "Anya, I need to show you something."

"Alright. I'll be right there," Anya said, carefully taking off her apron to see what Nikka wanted.

"It's in the back," Nikola said, her eyes on the girl who wasn't much older than her. She let Anya pass her into the back yard.

Nikola hesitated, then there was a blue light, pain in Anya's back, and she fell to the ground. Nikka sighed and slumped her shoulders. She grabbed Anya's phone and left the house. 'I want to see you, daddy.'

Vlad recieved the text and immediately replied. "Alright dearest. Are you alright??" He said, dropping what he was doing to go. His daughter very rarely texted him, too busy with the boy he despised.
