"I know... I want to defend those who can't defend themselves. But there ain't a whole lot of ways to do that. And then my brother developed powers and it all kind of flew out the window because I was devoted to keeping him safe."

"And now that's screwed as well," Kenny said, almost sympathetic.

"Yeah." Beatrice sighed. "I don't know what to do with myself now."

"There isn't much to do unless we ever get out," Kenny pointed out.

"I'm going to go insane in here." She said with a sigh.
A few days later a guard appeared at every one of their cells. "We're required by law to let all prisoners out in the fresh air for one hour per week." He said. "So come on, hurry up." The gifteds were led out into a prison yard that was about the size of a highschool gymnasium. There was a couple metal hoops a half-inflated basketball, a few cement picnic tables and nothing else, even the very ground paved over. (because fuck Fredrick, apparently XD) They could use their powers there, however the walls were 60ft tall, and the very top 2ft was made of the same material the cells were, negating powers if anyone ever made it up there. There were also several machine guns on towers nearby set to automatically aim at and pump any potential escapees full of bullets beforethey could move to get down or over the wall if they got as high as the top 2ft.
'Required by law'? Sharie frowned. Since when did 'law' apply to gifteds in their mind? No way. There had to be an ulterior motive for this. She followed the guard out quietly.
Josiah hadn't spoken a single word to Ben since their last conversation, no matter if he heard the boy or not. When the guard came to get him, he was convinced it was a trick, but he couldn't do anything about it, especially since his power didn't work in here. When they brought him out to the yard, he curled up in the furthest corner from the door fearfuly and didn't say a word to anyone.

Frederick hadn't hoped for much, and even though he was a little disappointed to find nothing growing, it felt wonderful to be out in the sun again. He stood there with his face turned towards the sky and his eyes closed.
Ben was suspicious, thinking along the same lines as Sharie, but even if he complained it wouldn't do him any good. After a minute of hesitation and blinking from the natural light, he went to pick up the basketball. He couldn't really play with it, but he could shoot some hoops. It felt good to move around outside. "Hey, Josiah, come play," he called after he picked it up and spotted the boy. It wasn't hard to identify the only child there.
Kenny stayed in the back and looked around at everyone there before he hugged his daughter. Her eyes were much more suspicious and uncertain than his curious gaze.
Red made a beeline for Victor, his eyes bright. Francis just 'happened' to step into the way and knock him flat on his back. "Oops, sorry."

Victor stifled a laugh as Francis knocked Red down deliberately. Hey, the guy couldn't blame him for that one. Then Vivian came out and he went straight to his sister and hugged her tight. "Vivian!" "I'm fine Victor, stop worrying about me so much." Vivian told him, hugging him back.
Josiah shook his head. If he played he'd have to talk.
Rakel was sitting on her own on the bench, looking like she was about ready to cut a bitch. She did not socialize. She was examining the security, trying to figure out a way out of here.

Francis glanced at Frederick. "Nikolai's the only one of us not here, you know," he said out loud. He still counted Victor and Red in that particular 'us' though there was a much more well-defined 'us' that excluded them.
"Josiah, come on, please?" Ben asked, trying to get the kid to have a bit of fun.

"Well, let's hope it stays that way then." Victor wasn't sure if he was included in that or not, but he didn't want Nikolai stuck here regardless. It was bad enough the rest of them were. "Nikolai doesn't need to be dragged into this mess."
Josiah shook his head more vigorously, not wanting to speak and hurt somebody possibly.

Ben put the ball under one arm and went over to Josiah's corner. "Come on, kid, come play. It'll be fun."
Francis nodded, and looked around the area, starting to wander. Frederick opened his eyes a bit and looked at Victor.

Victor smiled, knowing how much Fredrick must value being out in the sunlight. "You okay?" Vivian didn't speak, just stayed close to her brother with a smile and his arm around her. She knew she'd get a minute to talk strategy to him. She was gonna have to put up with his friends for now.
Josiah shook his head and cringed away. That's about when a foot collided with the back of Bens head. "Don't you dare hurt my brother!" Beatrice snapped, her fists up in a defensive position. Josiah looked up and a smile lit up his face. "Beatrice!" He ran over and hugged her tightly, clinging for dear life and never wanting to let her go. He didn't want his beloved big sister to disappear again.

Frederick nodded. "It's nice to be out here, even if nothing grows. I wish we could stay out here," he said, tilting his head upwards again.
Ben gasped in surprise and pain, raising his hand to his head and turning to face his attacker. "I wasn't going to hurt him!"

"Well, hopefully they weren't lying when they said they'd let us outside once a week, at least." Victor replied.
"Beatrice, he's nice!" Josiah protested. " His name's Ben, he's in the room next to mine, I was calling you and he heard me and I was scared so I..." Beatrice flushed scarlet. "Oh my god, I am so sorry." She said to Ben, mortified. "I take it for granted my brother doesn't talk to people so I didn't think you could have known him and... God, I am so sorry. Are you okay?"

"I wouldn't count on it except they can't be doing it for the sake of the law. We don't matter to the law, and it doesn't apply to us. So they must have a real reason for bringing us out here," Frederick said.
"I'll be fine. God you kick hard." Ben sat down. "Why is it granted that he doesn't talk to people?"

"To be totally honest I don't care why they bring us out here, I'm just glad they do. I thought wed be stuck in those godforsaken rooms forever." He said with a smile.
"Sorry, I'm a martial artist. And he doesn't talk to anyone but me." She told Josiah's new friend, sitting down with him and allowing her brother to sit on her lap. "And if he does it's usually a good sign he hates or at least doesn't trust them." Josiah leaned up and spoke into his sisters ear. "He says he doesn't hate you though."
