She almost started to cry again. "My brother... he's a gifted. His power is to force anyone he talks to to tell the truth to any question he asks them. You don't have the choice to lie or not answer... lying while he's around is painful but not impossible, but if he's the one asking the question, you have to tell the truth. Obviously if they could force him to do what they wanted he's the perfect interrogator... I swore to protect him because I knew they'd come for him. I swore on my life I'd protect Josiah and I failed." she shook her head. "And now they're putting him through god knows what and I can't stop them."

Victor didn't hear him.

Vivian narrowed her eyes anyway; Victor was one of only two people they could see equally well. Nevertheless, she didn't comment.

"Me too... I just wish I knew if they were alive. I mean Olivia has super speed so you'd think she'd make it but my sister was a teleporter and I saw her die." There was obvious pain in her voice as she said it, but Sharie did not cry.

"Okay.... Ben? Are they going to hurt me?"

"You see the girl on the end, directly across from me?" Kenny asked.

"I wish I could help you, but I've been in here for almost two weeks, I think," Frederick said, with a sigh.

Ben hesitated. "I don't know. They haven't hurt anyone yet, I don't think..."

Beatrice looked up. "Yeah... the brunette?"

"I've been imprisoned for four weeks I think. But I just got moved here today. Before this I was in a hospital recovering from my injuries." Sharie told him.

"Okay. Beatrice says they're bad and want to hurt me. That's why she was beating them up... Ben? Will I have to hurt anyone?"

"Yeah. That's my daughter. Mia," Kenny said. Mia glanced up and met Beatrice's gaze before her eyes fell back to the floor.

"They must have kept it off the news," Frederick said. He sounded a little disappointed.

"I hope not, Josiah. But you don't let them hurt you, alright?"

"Oh my god... I'm so sorry..." Beatrice was shocked and looked down, embarrassed.

"Probably. They don't like drawing attention to us." Sharie admitted.

"Okay.. but I don't want to hurt anyone either... Beatrice says that I have a special gift that can help a lot of people, but some bad men see someone with a special gift like mine and only see how they can make me use it to hurt people. And the people who are after us are bad men like that, so she'll protect me so they don't hurt me and try to make me hurt people... but the bad men caught us anyway..."

"I'm just glad I know she's safe. Sometimes it doesn't matter what you need to do, or what you should have done, and no matter how hard you try it's not good enough," Kenny said. "Just don't beat yourself up about your brother."

Frederick fell silent.

"I know, kiddo, but sometimes you have to do things you don't want to or like to do. You have to stay safe, alright?" Ben asked.

"...I wish I could see him. Just to know how bad he is..."

"So you said you've been in here two weeks?" Sharie asked. "They ever let out of these or are we stuck in solitary confinement the rest of our lives?"

"So... you think if they threaten to hurt me, unless I hurt someone else... I should do it?"

"It doesn't seem that anyone has been hurt yet, as far as this side can see," Kenny told her. "But I only know what's been passed along. There hasn't been anyone in that cell for a few days."

"They haven't let me or anyone I can see out, but I've seen them walk away with people... Don't know if that's a good thing, though. I've seen some of them come back, but a few days ago they passed by with someone they were guarding and he never came back," Frederick said. "I guess I might have fallen asleep though. But it's always one at a time."

"Yes, kid, I do. Keep yourself safe."

Beatrice nodded. "There'd be no reason to take him if they didn't want him to use his power for them... I mean... he's just a little kid. There's nothing else he can do for them." She shook her head. "And there's sure as hell no other reason for them to want me here. I'm just a normal person." Beatrice sighed. "Been in martial arts since I was six, but I'm still just a normal person. I'm only involved at all because I had to protect Josiah."

"That sounds ominous." Sharie admitted.

"Okay..." Josiah said. "Thank you for talking to me Ben. But where are you? Are you a ghost?"

"He still might not get hurt," Kenny pointed out.

Frederick sighed. "I don't know what to think."

Ben laughed. "No, I'm not a ghost. I'm in the room next to yours."

"I hope not...." Beatrice agreed.

"I suppose it doesn't really matter what we think while we're locked up in here, does it?" Sharie sighed. "Not unless we can come up with an escape plan."

"Oh!" Josiah actually laughed a little and put his hand on the wall. To think his new friend was right on the other side of this. "Wait... but then you must be stuck here like me!" Josiah realized.

"Yeah, I guess you're right," Frederick agreed. But there wasn't any way for them to escape, was there?

Ben's smile faded a bit. "Yeah, I'm stuck in here too," he confirmed.

Sharie lapsed into silence. She knew she couldn't give up on an escape plan. Xander wouldn't give up on her, nor wold he give up in her situation. She'd just have to come up with a plan.

"Oh... Ben? Are you alone in the world?" Josiah asked, concerned.

"What do you mean by that, kid?" Ben questioned.

"I mean, do you have anyone? In here or outside? Anyone you care about?"
