Finding xis identity is an important part of everyone's life. Without this searching, humans would be the equivalent of robots. Without Marcia's identity stages, we would all be the same, since identity is really all that we have. Identity determines everything about us, from our beliefs to our job. Of course, we don't always know everything about ourselves. As children, we are much less concerned about being 'us' and more concerned about playing. However, in our adolescent years, as we begin to enter the world of bills and jobs, we must find an identity or wander around in perpetual limbo. I can say that I know people from my friend group and from my classes who fit into each of Marcia's stages. I believe myself that I am in moratorium because though I have a few ideas as to what job I would like, I have yet to decide, I am agnostic, and my goals are fairly vague.
When it comes to careers, there is a hard decision for most of us. When we were kids, we would say we would want to be a princess, a magician, or in my case, a cat. As we get a little older, things begin to change. Most everyone I know wanted to either be a veterinarian or a paleontologist - I was in both groups. The more we grow, the more realistic our dreams get. But when it comes to actually choosing, it's much harder. You're deciding how you'll spend years of your life. For me, the obvious choice to everyone I know is author. I spend all of my time writing and I love it. The fact is, no matter how much you love it, it is so hard to finish a book, let alone publish it. Another option I've looked into is being a detective. The only problem is that while I would love to help solve murders and other serious crimes that would make people's lives better, I don't want to spent those years as a cop, having to make so many arrests a day. I don't like carrying out those dismal tasks that in most cases won't matter anyway.
Religion is a prominent feature in many people's lives, especially in Utah. Even to those who live by the laws of science and are firmly Atheistic, religion has an effect on their lives. More than believing in God or not, religion is the idea of what happens to you after death. It's rather shocking how many people don't know what agnosticism is, even people who are agnostic themselves. They say they're atheists, for the most part. The difference is enormous, because while neither group has a religion, agnostics are open to new ideas. Atheists believe that there is no higher power, while agnostics simply haven't found the right religion yet. While I have been to Buddhist, Mormon, and Catholic churches and been taught about others, I can't say that I really believe in the values that any of these churches have.
"All who have accomplished great things have had great aim, have fixed their gaze on a goal which was high, one which sometimes seemed impossible," is a quote by Orison Swett Marden, which conveys the importance of having goals. While it is not shameful to be without goals while you are young, in order to be anyone, you will have to aim to be. However, without knowing where you want to go in life, setting long term goals is rather hard to do. The farthest my own personal goals reach is to graduating high school. After that, I have no idea where I would like to go. Of course, I would like to be successful in life, but that isn't the kind of goal that gets you anywhere.
For all of the reasons mentioned, as well as a few more, I would place myself in moratorium. I love learning who I am, and I don't understand how anyone could ever be happy in foreclosure or diffusion. I need to explore everything, in order to find out where I fit best. I want to be the most that I can be, and I can't do that without finding out where I will excel the most. My goals may not be in place yet, but when I get them set, I know I will do well in life.
