Once everything was quiet, the old and battered hat twitched. A rip near the brim opened wide like a mouth, and it burst into song.
Oh, you may not think I'm pretty, But don't judge on what you see, I'll eat myself if you can find, A smarter hat than me. A thousand years or more ago, When I was newly sewn, There lived four wizards of renown, Whose names are still well known: Bold Gryffindor, from the wild moor, Fair Ravenclaw, from glen Sweet Hufflepuff, from the valley broad, Shrewd Slytherin, from fen. Now each of the four founders, Have their own house, for each Did value different virtues, In the ones they had to teach. You may belong in Gryffindor, where dwell the brave at heart. Their daring, nerve, and chilvary, set Gryffindoors apart Or you may belong in Hufflepuff, where they are just and loyal Those Hufflepuffs are true, and unafraid of toil. Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw, if you've a ready mind Where those of wit and learning, will always find their kind. Or maybe it's in Slytherin, you'll make your real friends, These cunning folks use any means, to achieve their ends. Now slip me snug about your ears, I've never yet been wrong. I'll have a look inside your mind, and tell you where you belong!

The song pretty much explained everything. Marx stood next to the Sorting Hat and unrolled a long scroll produced from the depths of his pockets.
"When I read your name," called Professor Marx, "step up here and sit on the stool. You will be sorted into your house. When sorted, please sit down at the corresponding table." He called the students up in alphabetical order by last name, starting, as was correct, with the A's.
Eventually, he got to the first name pertaining to the role play at hand:
"Genevieve Ann Charleston."

Genevieve swallowed hard. She stepped up, her knees wobbling. "Uh..."

Marx carefully lifted the Sorting Hat from its resting spot on the stool, and motioned for Genevieve to sit.

Jenna sat, breathing hard. This was not fun. She almost felt eyes staring her down.

Marx couldn't help but sigh at the first year's reaction. He set the hat daintily on her head, not wanting to cause more ruckus than she already was.

Jenna was concentrating. "Come on, think brave..." she though quietly. "Brave, hm?" said another voice. Jenna jumped. "You can read my thoughts?" she asked in her head, the hat ignored the question, bursting out "RAVENCLAW!"

Marx clapped politely for Jenna and sent her on her way towards the Ravenclaw table. When the hat murmured about her being brave, Marx expected Gryffindor; Ravenclaw was hardly known for its bravery. Nonetheless, he took the hat off her head, and called up the next person: "Lizabeth Chaze."
Shivering in anticipation, Liz walked up to the front of the hall. She looked up at Marx for a bit of guidance. With a small sigh, he put a hand on her shoulder and gently pushed her towards the stool. Still shivering, Liz sat.
The deputy headmaster set the worn hat on Lizabeth's head. She could hear the hat mumbling to itself as she looked at the hall filled with students. Worry flashed through her mind when she couldn't immediately find her big brother.
"Hmmgh, loyal to others... not too brave... not smart or sly, either..." Liz went red in embarrassment when the hat spoke, its voice more of a murmur then anything. Just before she thought she would die in embarrasment, it shouted: "HUFFLEPUFF!"
Eric looked sad as he watched his sister quietly walk to the Hufflepuff table and sit with strangers, Marx having to pluck the hat off Lizabeth's head so she didn't walk off with it. He checked the scroll again, and called, "Alexander Clark."

Astin drew himself up and walked up to Lucien, sitting on the stool. Once the hat was placed on his head, it paused, totally silent for a moment, then cried, "GRYFFINDOR!" Astin blushed, handed the hat to Lucien and ran off to sit with Ryan.

Marx gladly accepted the hat. Eric was too concerned about Lizabeth to properly greet Astin. He just nodded and tried to find her in the crowd of Hufflepuffs.
More first years were sorted until the next pertinent name was called: "Augusta Hawthorn."

August flinched when the name Augusta was used but she walked up to the front all the same. She reached the front of the Great Hall and sat on the stool. She calmed herself and closed her eyes and felt the hat now resting on her head. He Let out a breath and before the Hat whispered anything to her she thought 'Hello,' the sorting hat paused and said quietly "Well that has to be a first," he said at his normal level "Brave yes, for a first year, brave," he paused and quietly again "But a background most would not let any know about, oh yes. A smart one you are, for your age, being able to hide so much from your peers but-" the was interrupted by August thinking 'Do you share with other what you find?' there was now fear running through her mind. Her legs moving back and forth nervously, not able to tap against the floor since she couldn't reach. "Of course not, completely confidential," the hat whispered. "You do seem to be brave-" interrupted again 'Am I really a Gryffindor though?' The sorting hat felt a little territory "Maybe not, but you seem ambitious-" 'but am I a Slytherin?' "You seem like a smart enough girl-" 'But is that all I am? Smart?'"Well Maybe but you seem loyal to those-" 'Is Hufflepuff really even a house? Cause all of the houses can be loyal-' As the debate continued between the two it seemed like this sorting was taking longer than it should. She started to think 'So that house seems good but-' Finally that hate stopped her mid sentence "This is taking to long! You will be SLYTHERIN!
August jumped off the stool and walked calmly to the Slytherin table. She looked up at the teachers to see her Aunt standing up and cheering obnoxiously and yelling, as it turned out she did for all the new Slytherins.

Tanner looked behind him at his twin brother for reassurance. After Wesley smiled and gave the thumbs up sign, Tanner smiled back and almost ran to the stool, putting the hat eagerly on his head and casting his eyes towards his future table, watching the scarlet and gold. "HUFFLEPUFF!" Tanner froze. The Hufflepuff table started clapping. He locked eyes with his brother. This wasn't right, they had to be in the same house, and there was no way they'd make Wesley a Hufflepuff...
A push by Professor Marx jolted him back to his senses. He took of the hat and walked slowly over to the clapping table, sitting down numbly next to Liz.
Of course, Professor Marx read out his brothers name next. "Wesley Just,"
Wesley did not run. A moment ago he would've been elated for this moment. But he knew where he was going. And his brother wouldn't be there. Sure enough, almost before it touched his head, the hat shouted "GRYFFINDOR!" Wesley gave Tanner a sad, apologetic look as he walked over to the Gryffindor table and sat at Ryans other side.

"I'm sorry about your brother, but you'll still be brothers. You just won't have all your classes together," Ryan murmured once he stopped clapping for Wesley.

Wesley shook his head. They hadn't had all their elementry school classes together either, but they'd always met at lunch, swapped stories... heck, he prefferred it when they had different classes, so they could enjoy the joke of swapping timetables randomly and hoping the teachers wouldn't notice. Stilll... "You don't get it," Wesley muttered. "We were supposed to be the pair of troublemakers, like... Fred and George Weasley or... Sirius Black and James Potter. But we're never gonna see each other. At least, not long enough to pull anything good." He sighed. "Whatever. I'll go on my own,"
