South America seemed like the perfect place. It was out of country, meaning local investigators wouldn't focus on it, but it was close enough that travel didn't take too long. It had many areas that were uninhabited save for animals and indigineous peoples trying to preserve their ways. So, the American government set up a laboratory in South America--specifically, under the driest desert in the world, the Atacama Desert of Chile. While modifying the human physiology with animal DNA was taboo across the world, under the world, it didn't seem to matter.

The secret research facility by the witty name of Area 50 flourished for decades. After many failed voluntary experiments, they went for the more fun alternative of kidnapping people across the globe. Soon, they created a hybrid that didn't die hours after modification. This hybrid was known as PROJECT CHIMERA in all official documents--a monsterous hybrid from Greek mythology.

The scientists deep in Area 50 had discovered something while they were playing God with the human genome. If they modified this and adjusted that, something fantastic happened to the test subject. All they needed to do was to stabilize the subject, but that was easier said than done with the meager funds currently sent to experiments unrelated to animals. So, many kilometers away in the Amazon Rainforest, the government set up a second research facility: Area 52.

Area 52 was dedicated to the creation of what they called 'gifteds', people gifted with fantastic powers. It took a few years less to make the gifteds than the animal hybrids, but once they did, it was a gigantic breakthrough. The first stable gifted was called PROJECT ZEUS--the lord of the universe in Greek mythology. The scientists rejoiced, and continued creating more projects as they had after project Chimera.

It's been twenty years since project Chimera, and ten since project Zeus. Both test subjects are still alive. Area 50 and Area 52 developed an intense rivalry, always trying to outdo each other. The scientists' rivalries had even effected the test subjects attitudes; shortly after capture, they were taught the opposite side was absolutely horrific. The DNA-injected were made out to be horrific abberations of nature, while the gifteds were demonic monsters with abyssal abilities. It was fuel for the fire to come.

One day, the power went out. Even the backup generators weren't running. Every cell door, open; every life support, off. The scientists had made a run for it, many unfortunate enough to be the subject of the released subject's wrath. Some escaped, and didn't shut the door behind them, leaving the way out for the test subjects clear. The new leaders of Area 50 and Area 52, Project Chimera and Project Zeus respectively, found a map of the area, with directions of how to get from their facility to the opposing faction's.

The government has deployed its own agents to control the damage. Some of them are past test subjects deemed suitable to serve the government, while others are humans equipped with the finest equipment available. The leader of this damage control mission is a being CODENAME TARTARUS. Little is known about Tartarus other than it exists. Shrouded in a black cloak, even the agents are unsure of what Tartarus looks like, or if it is even human.

The monstrous animal-human hybrids of Area 50 and the powerful gifteds of Area 52 are prepared for war, while the government is trying to round both of them up. What will be the outcome of this?

One thing is for certain, though: the enemy of my enemy is my friend, even if only temporarily.

Explanation

There are three factions: the DNA-injected, the gifted, and the government. You can join as any of them. Named positions, such as those of Chimera, Zeus, and Tartarus, are first come, first serve. You can only have one named position. Please try to keep the faction ratio even; I could care less about the male to female ratio.

DNA-Injected

They resemble anthros and furries moreso than catgirls. Any species is allowed, except for mythical ones like dragons and unicorns. They can speak clear English, but can also communicate with members of their species. Remember that cold-blooded hybrids are likely to spend their time in the sun, cats won't necesarily like dog, predators get hungry, etc. etc.

Project Chimera: The strongest human-animal hybrid of the faction, as well as the leader. Chimera can be of any gender and any animal.

Gifted

They look much more like normal people than the hybrids, that's for sure. Powers range from simple things like telekinesis to limited mind control. As much as the scientists have tried, they haven't created a gifted with more than two powers. They also haven't created fantastic, world-altering powers like weather control or extensive shapeshifting. Shapeshifters are limited to a category of shapes, like canid, feline, or furniture.

Project Zeus: The most powerful gifted of the faction, and the leader. Zeus can be of any gender and have any power.

Agents

Humans or test subjects enlisted to assist the government. They can be double-agents, but please don't announce it; private message me either on the site or chatango, and put in their information as if they belonged normally to either faction. All humans are required to carry guns as well as tranquilizer guns. Most humans are distrustful of their freak of science allies, and are required to kill them if they have evidence that they are no longer loyal to the government.

Codename Tartarus: The appointed leader of the mission. Tartarus can be human, gifted, or a hybrid, and can be of either gender. Wears a black cloak when not in combat, or when talking to underlings.

May I claim Zeus or second-in-command for the gifted, whichever's still available? (Raven said second-in-command but that character is listed as first, and I don't know who's right.)
Also, second-in-command for the agents.
For the former, the ability to manipulate others' minds to see something that's not real, an illusionist.
For the latter, the ability to shape and form useful things (particularly weaponry) out of assorted material (metal (or stone if they had to) would obvs. work best) at the touch of it, an alchemist.
If either is not okay, please let me know.

The scientists' meeting room had been converted into a war room of sorts. Strewn across the mahogany table were various maps and files containing all the information on the opposite faction the hybrids had. They had only recently discovered the location of the gifteds' facility, which meant an attack was iminent. Lucien was pouring over a large map of the surrounding area, making the occasional mark on it with a black sharpie.

The experiment known as Project Chimera looked like he had been through hell. His entire body was scarred, patches of fur missing in some places revealing harsh burns underneath. His scavenged outfit consisted of a dirty lab coat and bloody jeans, with a hole for his tail--better than the hospital gown many hybrids were used to wearing. A curled-up whip hung from his side, the exact same whip once used against the hybrids that was now used against their enemies.

"... Hm." Lucien marked a large circle on the map, and chewed thoughtfully on his lip.

[Raven]

Astin sat under the table, playing with his toes. The tip of one of his ears brushed the underside of the table. His tail flicked, and his attention averted to that. He nipped at it, chasing it around and around until he ran into Lucien's legs. He fell over, and his fur fell into his eyes. His huge ears flopped over and his tiny tongue flicked out to lick is small, pink nose. He didn't get off of Lucien's feet.

Tartarus spun the black top once again. The last time it had fallen, a girl had died. A gifted girl, killed by another. The murderer had been completely crazy, and had no control. Still, it didn't stop Tartarus from killing her in turn. A danger like that couldn't be allowed to live. And now, years later, he was determined to put a stop to these experiments before any more unnecessary deaths took place. Kenny Clark was going to make sure that no more innocents died, like Alexandria Cove had. His eyes flashed as he lifted the top into his fingers. It was made from black walnut wood, paint that had once formed a design was now only left in tiny patches. It had been hers, and it was the only thing more than memories that he had of her. Memories. That was what he did best... A cold laugh escaped his lips, before the room grew silent again. It would be soon. He had to make sure the experiments were captured and contained.

Lucien felt something especially furry on his feet. With a start, he stepped back, and reached for his weapon. It was just a child hybrid, and an adorable one at that. Lucien let his arm drop to his side. He almost felt ashamed for reaching for the whip.

"... What are you doing under there?" he asked, kneeling down to the child's level. Lucien noted his ears were equally as large, but they were balanced out by his bigger body.

[Raven]

"Dunno. Playin," Astin answered, flicking his right ear back into an upright position. His voice was high-pitched, almost like a fox's scream. He licked the back of his paw-hand adorably.

[FoxTrott]

The corners of Lucien's mouth twitched, hinting at a smile. "You should really play somewhere else," he said, flicking his tail back and forth, "This room is no playground for children." At that, Lucien stood back up, and returned to looking over the maps and files. He scribbled something in the margin of one map, and set the marker down while he looked through a stack of papers.

"That's what everyone says," Astin humphed unhappily.

[FoxTrott]

"Because it's true," mused Lucien, still looking through the papers. He picked up a document titled Project Chimera vs. Project Zeus, and eyed it with interest before tossing it aside and continuing his search. "You can stay in here as long as you don't cause too much trouble, all right?"

[Raven]

Astin nodded solemnly, but it didn't last. "My name is Astin," he said, smiling. His teeth were sharp. "What's yours?"

[FoxTrott]

Lucien looked down at Astin, shocked by the especially sharp teeth. He smiled back with equally keen teeth. "I'm Lucien," the leader responded, "Most everybody knows my name. Surprised you don't, but considering your age..." He flicked his tail.

[Raven]

Astin's ears pricked, turning and focusing in on something behind him. He turned near silently, finding a mouse that was in the middle of the room. He pounced on it with sharp claws and teeth, turning the rodent into a bloody mess.

Kenny waited a bit impatiently for his second in command to show up. He'd made it clear he wanted to talk to him.

“Aah, foi mal*” he said hurriedly entering the room and shutting the door behind him. He looked genuinely concerned, Jaime, though with an overall tone of professionalism that showed he was serious about his work. Nodding his head as a means of apology to his partner, he looked him dead in the eye (or where he would’ve thought them to be) – he had dark, thin brown eyes and hair along with tan skin that came from being born in São Paulo, Brazil, half-Japanese mix. With an intense sense of nationalism being his main drive for joining the government, he was trilingual and exceptionally loyal as well as a nice asset as a translator and partner. What he lacked in being stern he felt was made-up by Tartarus, and didn’t mind his position in the least. “Mmh… sorry” he muttered, realizing his mistake. “I ask you’re not angry. What is it you wished to talk to me about?” Not breaking eye contact with him, he beamed confidence whether or not it was truly there.

Raising her left hand up and singling out an area on the map within the ‘L’ shape, she marked the base and plan of action in a way no one else could see. Having such a difficult power to capture, she practiced at any given time… she was Project Zeus, Katherine, Kat, the first gifted to be created and thus was scarred enough to show for it… however, in the same fashion, she covered this up to appear an otherwise normal, light-skinned thin girl, who could just as well be another human. “If the third goes to the left, across the way…” she mumbled, tilting her head to the side and creating toy soldiers in her mind to walk along the path. She seemed relatively young and was sure that Project Chimera had to have been much older. Surely not this girl with long, wavy brown hair, cold round eyes, and a smile equally lighthearted as it was a promise of death. She was very calm, but in her eloquence drummed up a fair audience of gifteds to follow her. All this despite not having looked to hit her thirties quite yet, nor having grown out of wearing sundresses and being a girl. “Kumair…” she called in a plain voice, looking over her shoulder. “Do you think we ought to take a more forceful approach, or fortify our bases more efficiently in waiting?” smiling bright, she tested his agreement.

Lucien's ears had noted the mouse far before Astin pounced on it. His ears drooped slightly at the bloody spot now on the carpet. Sighing, Lucien went back to looking through the files. Something in them jumpstarted his thoughts, and he hastily grabbed a map and began crossing things out.

"Karma!" bayed Lucien, "Come here!"
