As the two test subjects awakened, they discovered they were in tiny glass chambers. There was a glass door between the two chambers that they could open. The lights were fairly dim. Suddenly a robotic, vauguely feminine voice spoke over an intercom. "Hello and, again, welcome to the Apeture Science Computer-Aided Enrichment Center. We hope your breif detention in the relaxation vault has been a pleasant one. Your specimen has been processed and we will soon be ready to begin the test proper. Please feel free to interact with the other test subjects until the final DNA and genetic modifications have been properly analyzed."

Laura listened to this message curled in the fetal position on top of the bed, the blankets under her, the bed neatly made. Her sunken brown eyes were wide, but seeing nothing. She was thinking about the dream she'd been having before the voce woke her up. They'd all been there! They were back! She tried to hold onto the memory, but it was like trying to keep water in cupped hands; the details were trickling away faster than she could hold onto them. What had they been talking about? Which ones, exactly, had spoken? She remembered the pink one gabbing away insessantly, as she'd always done, and she was pretty sure the green one had said a few words as well, but what about? and who else was there? Blue was there, definatley, but was black? what about red? Laura had been hearing voices in her head for as long as she could remember. They were intensely varried. Some had real names, some not. Some were always prattling on about this, that and the other thing, and some that only chimed in once in awhile, when they had something knowledgeable to say. Some had rather brilliant ideas, others... not so much. She had assigned them all colours to keep track of them. She used to hate it when they were all talking at once, overlapping over one another, shouting to get her attention. But now the silence tormented her. What she wouldn't give to hear them all just once, even if the thing that once caused her anguish happened more frequently than ever. She needed them to function, needed their support.
She'd been going to therapy and was once put in an asylum for them, and after several months of treatment, they vanished not gradually but all at once. She couldn't adjust to the new silence in her head.
She didn't even notice the door into the other subjects chamber. She hadn't even noticed the other chamber at all.

Caroline blinked awake. Other test subject?? What was she talking about?? She sat up, pulling her goggles down over her eyes to correct her vision. She didn't know where she was, only that she was thankful they had been kind enough to dim the lights. Her extremely pale, sun-starved skin couldn't stand light. Because Caroline Chaze had a rare disease known as photosensitivity.
Curiosity won the best of Caroline and she walked towards the door. "Hello?" she asked.

The door opened easily. Laura wished she could tell Caroline her own name back. But she couldn't. Ever since the voices left, she hadn't been able to speak to anyone, however much she might want to. She'd always been shy, but she could almost not think about it while pink and red were spouting off encouragement and blue was offering his vain attempt at advice. Oftentimes they'd told her what to say when she herself could think of nothing. Now, however much she tried, she could no longer speak with other people. Her voice just wouldn't cooperate.
No, she knew it was something more than that.
So she gave a painful attempt at a smile and got into a more natural sitting position. She held out her hand for Caroline to shake, as if to say "Nice too meet you,"

Caroline stepped out to take her hand and shook it, slowly realizing her partner was mute. What an interesting pair they'd found. She wondered if the girl was deaf, too, but figured it rude to ask. "It's nice to meet you. I guess we'll be something like partners."

Laura nodded. She wondered what they were here for, but wasn't sure how to potra the question. The more of her partner she took in, the more in concerned her. She looked worriedly at Carolines fragile skin, which looked as white as salt. And why was she wearing goggles? was there something wrong with her eyes? Great, so one half their partnership was fragile and vision-impaired, and the other was mentally scarred, mute, and not at all strong.
As blue would've said if he was here "This.... just really isn't going to end well, is it?"

A very one-sided conversation this would be. "Um.. it's a good thing the lights are dim," Caroline said, mostly for something to say.

Luna got a questioning look on her face and cocked her head to the side.

"I'm photosensitive. I can't be in strong light or I get something like an allergic reaction," Caroline explained.

Luna's face looked sympathetic, and she nodded to show she understood.

Caroline smiled. "We'll do pretty alright so long as there aren't any bright lights," she assured.

Luna nodded Suddenly the robotic voice was back. "Thank you for waiting. We are now ready to begin the test proper. Before we start, however, keep in mind that although fun and learning are the primary goals of all Enrichment Center activities, serious injury may occur. Stand back. The portal will open in three... two... one..." A bright blue portal opened in Lauras room.

Caroline bit her lip. Serious injury? That didn't sound good. "L-let's go," she said anyway, and stepped up to the portal.
