Carmen swallowed and gave a sympathetic nod. "A house this size warrants loneliness. With just your dad to keep you company, I'd be lonely too." She had no reason to be suspicious of Melanie, but was puzzled that she would say she was as happy to see Carmen as she was Carmen was to see her. Carmen reasoned that remaining on the streets would mean starvation or lethal food poisoning, so Melanie had technically saved her life.

Carmen frowned, curious as to why Melanie had shivered at what she'd said, but didn't address it.
Instead, she looked over the apple and bashfully said, "Oh, I couldn't possibly take any more. I'd hate to impose."

"We have more than enough, Carmen. Most of it will go bad before we even realize we have it," Melanie said. "So take whatever you like. Even if you somehow managed to clean us out it would be no trouble to go to the store."

Carmen's expression brightened. "Really?" She looked at the apple, then smiled at Melanie. "Well, I suppose..." She approaches a set of cupboards, then sets down the apple and opens a pair at random. She picks up a can and examines it, then stuffs it in her bag. She begins to shovel anything in sight into her bag, not stopping to look at any of it. After clearing out a cupboard and a half, she closed them, satisfied. She picked up her apple and resumed eating it, grinning gratefully at Melanie.

Carmen's eyes widened. She nearly spit out the apple she had been chewing on. She swallowed hard, then shook her head. "That doesn't sound like a good idea. I really need to keep moving. Besides, you've already provided plenty." She nervously nibbled at the apple, laughing sheepishly.

Carmen cleared her throat, trying hard not to choke on the apple bits she'd been chewing. Oh, crap, now I've screwed myself over. She thought.
Laughing nervously, she said, "Oh, you know....places to be, things to see, stuff to get done....yeah....." She looked over the apple, avoiding Melanie's gaze.

"Yes.... But a dead end is still a somewhere and to get somewhere you need to go anywhere and to get anywhere you need to wander first." he states, though not rudely.
Then shrugs and continues,
"It just seems this time the somewhere was actually a nowhere, my mistake."
