Agreed, but the series wouldn't have been able to come to a respectable end any other way

Light was turning into a psychopathic maniac, therefore he had to die. Besides, we cannot truly say that Ryuk wouldn't have killed him anyway.

I love sad endings, so I think Kira's ending was adequate.

I feel that the ending was a terrible cop-out. I don't think Mikami would've been so careless as to let that happen, and I really felt that the ending was an 'All evil must be stopped' sort of happy ending, the clearest way to resolve the 'problem'. Upon seeing the ending, I wasn't even mad, I was just like 'really? I'm supposed to believe that would happen?' I think I would've been more happy with the ending if Ryuk just did it on his own without the police force getting involved, or without Mikami basically bringing the whole thing about. For the 'good team' to triumph in such a simple way was just weak. Raito wouldn't be so stupid as to allow something like that to happen. If he were that incompetent, he would never have chosen Mikami to be Kira. /avidkirasupporter

*Remembers logic* Right, I do love sad endings, but I do think it was a stupid ending. Upon reading the 13th volume with all the interviews and such, I learned that Tsugumi Ohba apparently had a zetta hard time thinking up a way for Kira to lose. Whether it was in a safety deposit box or not; Mikami would have tested out the Death Note. But I don't blame Tsugumi Ohba for making Mikami suddenly incompetent. Being a mangaka is hard work. >> The part where Mikami also deems Light as "Not a god" really bugs me, too. He's thought so highly of him up to now, why would he suddenly break upon seeing his savior in a tight spot HE caused?

I was bored and saw this and thought, 'How should I contribute to this?' Then it hit me.
What would have happened if Kira didn't die? What is the most perfect anwser?

Thats why the series couldn't end in any other way! there really isn't anther answer! If Light lived, he would've beaten Near right at that one scene. Near would die. That leaves the last of the task force, and really.. I don't think they're exactly competent XD
Light would've taken over and ruled the world. So there was really no other acceptable ennding.

@zedek: I agree. I was really bothered by that, especially since he sort of brought about it. Gifted: I disagree with that. I would've found that ending very acceptable. @russia: To continue that, I think it would be the means of a sequel. Kira's law takes over, everyone knows about it, now he rules basically over the government... they may or may not decide to work with him. It would challenge justice even further. I really would love to see what kind of concepts they'd come up with given a world that's perfectly relevant to Kira's ideals... so in short, I can see where you're coming from, Gifted, saying there's no other acceptable ending but him dying, all I'm saying is it that he didn't have to die that way at that time. They could've been more clever about it, really. >:
