"Hey, Rhyme," Kat muttered halfheartedly. She wondered if she would get off easily and he would go back to what he was doing without saying anything else.

Rhyme frowned. "What's wrong?" he asked, grabbing some of the more important files and notes before walking towards Kat.

"It's nothing," Kat replied, attempting to smile; it turned out more like a grimace.

Rhyme's frown deepened. "It doesn't look like nothing," he commented, putting his arm around Kat's shoulders. After a moment, he added, "Maybe you can help me figure out some things... Even though I moved out, I'm still on the Kira case. I'm researching the death notebook's abilities. Want to help me over some ice cream?"
Not too far from the truth, Rhyme thought, smiling.

Kat couldn't think of a way to refuse without making him suspicious. "Sure. I actually came down to look at that and the rules as well," she replied.

Rhyme nodded. He gathered a few books, stuffing notes inside of them before departing to the ice cream shop with Kat.

Right before they left, Kat swore. "I forgot I promised to meet Velvet! Oh, God, I hope she doesn't mind... I'll see you later, Rhyme," she said, kissing him. Then she ran off down the hall.

"B-but," Rhyme stuttered, surprised by the kiss and Kat's sudden leave. He sighed, and went back to his spot at the computer. Rhyme began re-spreading out his papers and books, but was distracted by Kat. He shook his head. Gotta concentrate on this, the teen thought, looking at his notes. Stay awake. Concentrate. Don't think about Kat. Concentrate...

Concentrate he did. For the rest of the day, Rhyme stayed in the library, surrounded by a growing fortress of books and papers. He even stayed when the librarian turned off the lights and left. With only the illumination of the computer screen, he stayed up all night, flipping through books and tapping at the keyboard. He almost drifted off a few times, but was kept awake by the fact that desks aren't the best places to sleep. Finally, he leaned his head on the keyboard, promising himself just to close his eyes...
... and he woke up to find the librarian prodding him gently. Murmuring an apology, Rhyme scrambled to his feet, and shut down the computer. He gathered his stack of notes, along with a few books, and went back to his room, leaving the librarian to clean up the rest.
