"Welcome," the electronic voice said "Is this the one you have chosen for the investigation?" A female voice brought the attention from the lap top to an older teen sitting criss cross on the floor. "Yes, that is him," She smiled and said "So R, what do you know about serial killers?"

Rhyme opened his eyes.
He promptly pinched himself, and the wince it brought on made him realize this wasn't a dream, and he hadn't been drugged and taken to some secret investigation room after he opened the door.
"... Um," he began, rapidly composing himself, "A lot of them have a motive for the killings beyond simple rage. For example, a really, really ticked off employee could kill his boss, but he wouldn't kill his coworkers, because they didn't have anything to do with it. Somebody trying to prove a point, to their family, to an opinion, or to society at large, would kill more than one person. They're trying to make a point, and they can't do that with just one life. That's their thinking, at least."
Rhyme--or R, as he had been called--slid to the floor, and sat with his legs splayed out on the floor. "Or, they could be trying to make a difference. Kira, as far as my knowledge goes, was trying to rid the world of evil, make the world better. Kind of like the Holocaust." He shuddered at the thought of Kira as some sort of neo-Hitler. "The KKK, Kira, witch hunters--the killers wanted to make a difference. Then there's the schizos and psychopaths, those that plead insanity in court and get away with it."
"So," he finished, "I know there's three types of serial killers: those that're trying to prove a point, those that're trying to make a difference, and those that're plain nuts. And try not to call me R... It makes you sound like a pirate."

Yami let a slight smile break on her face. Though to everyone else she was just a smiling friendly teen that was just her act. after being orphaned she became serious and let nothing get in her way. She looked at Rhyme and said "Well N was sent a case about a week back about a murderer lose in Los Angeles, California and I have picked you to help me work the case." she paused and looked him in the eyes "Do you except this case Ry?"

Again, "Um..." was the first thing out of Rhyme's mouth. He shook his head to clear it, looked at the woman, and nodded.
"I accept," he responded, with another vigorous nod, "Just... Why me? Why was I picked to help?"

"Why doesn't matter," The electronic voice said "Now I must go work on a case. I will check progress in about five hours," Then the N disappeared and Yami said "Well, Here is the case file," She handed over a folder and said "Hope you have a strong stomach, those pictures aren't for the light hearted." She looked at he lap top and started opening programs. "If you have listened to the news the NN killer is on the lose in LACUS. NN stands for name and number. That is how we attach the murders together, which at the moment are totaled up to 12. The murderer, as you can tell by the pics, Carves the Name of the victim and then a series of random numbers. Each different on each body. Now the media is having a field day and we want to solve this as soon as possible." She let out a breath and said "But this person is good, they leave no evidence and what has gotten us truly interested in the case is that they are leaving clues behind to where the next murder will take place. That is why this is so urgent. We have only solved seven of the thirteen puzzles but each one leads to the next case which we have assumed but we want to finish all of the encase there is an over all message. This person isn't killing to prove a point or change the world, this person is just committing mass murder for the hell of it."

Rhyme casually flipped through the case file, and winced at the pictures. "Yikes," he said, noticing a particularly brutal photograph, "Definitely for the heck of it... He has some method to his madness, though, so he's not hopelessly insane... Clues, hm..." The redhead closed the file, and stood up.
"Can you tell me all the clues, um, N's assistant?" Ry asked, biting his lip, "Not just the unsolved ones, but the solved ones, too. I'll try to get this figured out as soon as possible, but I can't make any guarantees; my roommate's kind of distracting, and she'll think I'm up to something if I deny a trip to the ice cream parlor or library..." He gnawed thoughtfully on his lip for a few more moments. "Is there a possibility I could be moved to another room, temporarily? Girls and boys aren't supposed to room together, anyway..."

"I those are in the folder as well," Yami said "In this room I am Y but outside of here call me Yami," she let out a breath and started digging through papers "Of course the case is at the top priority, for Wammy's that is, and will be treated as such. There will be no sharing of information to anyone outside of this room and I do suggest that you spend your nights in here, though not much sleeping will be done until this case is over." She then turned back to him and said "Please try to act as normal as possible in public and all your class schedules are changed so you will be in here with me working. You catch all that?"

Ry smirked. No class? No restful nights? No problem. He was a bit disappointed by the fact he couldn't share any information, but that was to be expected of a high-priority case. The name Yami seemed vaguely familiar to him, though; had Kat said she was the late Blue and Seven's roommate? He gave a slight shrug of his shoulders.
"I got it, yeah," he said, nodding less vigorously than before, "No sleep, no schooling until this is over. I'll try to sneak in here whenever I can. I assume you don't like unwanted visitors, so I'll probably get here once my roommate goes to bed... Or when she's not looking. Whatever works." He shrugged again. "Anyway. It's an honor to be working on the case with you and N, Y."

"Of course," Yami said rather distracted, her thumb touching her front bottom teeth. "So do not work on this case anywhere but in this room," he removed the thumb and said "I do not need a bunch of L impostors ruining the case. Also, Rodger has already reassigned you to this room. To everyone on the outside it will only look like you had a room change, which isn't to surprising for a male and female together in a room doesn't seem to be up to code in this world." She then let out a breath and said "Well, we have done all we can for right now. I need you back here at exactly one am, nothing later then that." Yami then stood up and said "Sense we are going to be sharing this room...Just treat me like you would any other member of your gender, but for today is the first day, you are free to leave the room while I change."

What about the other times when you change? Rhyme thought with a worried look. He shrugged it off, and turned around, hand on the doorknob.
"I'll grab my stuff," he said, glancing over his shoulder, "I... don't exactly have an expansive wardrobe, but I'm not going to sit around in the same thing all day." He handed the case file to Yami. "I will probably come back before one, 'cause my roommate will be suspicious if I leave in the middle of the night. See you soon, Y."
At that, Ry opened the door, and slid outside as carefully as he had slid inside, closing it softly behind him.

((Time skip to next day))
Yami sat on the floor looking through the clues. This would be a difficult case, note being able to see the crime scene. She had been awake all night looking through everything and recording the details and discoveries she had found and gone over.

Rhyme stumbled inside, tripping on his own two feet. He managed to save the cereal, but not the CD; it fell out of his hoodie's pocket and rolled over to Yami, hitting her knee and falling on its side. The detective landed with an "oomf" on the floor, holding the bowl of cereal far in front of him. The sugary breakfast cereal was, for the most part, still inside the bowl.
"S-sorry," Ry apologized, sitting up, "The disc's an important part of the Kira case... Since its owner's now dead, I don't want it to fall into anyone else's hands." He shoved a handful of Lucky Charms into his mouth, snatched the CD, and went to his corner of the room. Various papers were scattered around his pile of clothes, which served as a makeshift table.

"Kira case..." Yami said "That case has been celebrated to much." She let out a sigh and said "Wammy's seem to make it heir way of being a weekend warrior when they get no where in the case. If you think about it deathnotes are being dropped more and more into the community. Like a wish for death. I feel like as long as it is only used for criminals there should be no problem-" She quickly paused "Unless," she then rustled through some paper and then grabbed a picture of one of the first crime scenes. "I knew something was off about this," She then took out the autopsy report. She then looked up and said "Kira is in LA,"

Rhyme was in the midst of devouring his cereal when Yami finished. He was about to speak when a few stray marshmallows got caught in his throat. Rhyme gave a couple violent coughs before regaining the ability to speak clearly.
"You positive?" he asked, coughing again, "If the wounds look self-inflicted, there'd be a good chance it is Kira behind these... Or a Kira, at least." Ry gnawed thoughtfully on his already-bleeding lip. "Considering the lack of a real motive, this could be a test of his/her new-found abilities, seeing what the notebook of death can do. Or it could be a distraction while something major is going unnoticed. Or there could be two Kiras, and this one's providing the distraction while the other goes about killing criminals without having to worry about investigators on his tail. Or it's not Kira at all, and just a very clever person. Or--!"
Rhyme cut himself off, and sighed. "I'm rambling," he admitted, looking down at his cereal, "Sorry, I'll stop."
